: Rebulding windows in '68 Malibu
AZ_Ron Jan 23rd, 06, 1:26 AM Hi All...This '68 I'm getting has some major window issues... What all is involved in rebuilding the front and rear windows?? They're manual windows. I've seen the rollers for sale, but am unsure of how many or what I need to get...
Any help is much appreciated!

surfingreg Jan 23rd, 06, 2:06 AM Not too big a deal...I replaced the entire mechanism in all mine....just takes some elbow grease....you can get new ones from Year One, OPGI and other places...If I remember right, they're around $50 each....the only thing I couldn't find was new vent window frames...I just cleaned up the old ones and reused them...good luck.
67shovel Jan 24th, 06, 9:37 AM Ron, you really would be guessing if you order the parts before you pull it apart and inspect the rollers and mechanisum. You may not need to order anything more than a couple of nylon rollers.
1968SS Jan 26th, 06, 10:50 AM I currently have my 68 quarter windows out. It is a somewhat difficult job so I would replace every roller you can. They are not too expensive and get really brittle with age. Nothing worse than getting it all back together and have that part that you didn't replace break!!!
Cheers
Steve
Olle Jan 26th, 06, 5:35 PM It's not too complicated, but I would definitely recommend that you get the Fisher body manual before you start working on it. I did it on my -71 Camaro and spent several frustrating hours trying to adjust the windows without getting it right. After locating a manual, it took maybe 30 minutes per side to get it perfect. It's kinda like a Chinese puzzle: Almost impossible to do if you don't do it in the correct order, but very easy if you follow the steps in the manual.

If only I had known this before spending something like 10-12 hours on the passenger side window alone!
AZ_Ron Feb 6th, 06, 1:03 AM Ok... looks like I'll be bringing the car home sometime in the next week... Where can I pickup one of those manuals, and how much do they run?
Ron
Olle Feb 6th, 06, 10:02 AM You can get them from most any restoration part supplier, for example Year One (look for #RFSA68). It's $43.95 and worth every penny.
AZ_Ron Feb 9th, 06, 2:08 AM Check this out... turns out I live about 3 miles from CARS...
Guess I know where I'll be getting the majority of my stuff... no shipping and can walk in and buy stuff, come home and install it!!! I'm excited!

strangler Feb 10th, 06, 10:39 AM I live three miles from National Parts Depot and have found that it has saved me a lot of money in shipping .... and returns....
Isn't it nice to actually see the parts before purchase, and with things like door skins and quarters Im able to pick out the 'good one' instead of the dented ones that end up getting shipped.
dc0ntrer4s Feb 21st, 06, 1:00 PM Your window guides might just need to be greased. Take your door panels off and spray some wd-40 or some lube and see if they smooth out. if they do then you might just need to grease them with lithium grease. the guide rollers don't roll, they actually just slide up and down. My 69 quarter windows were bad. after buying quarter window guide rollers i found out that my guides were fine they just needed to be greased. check it out.
AZ_Ron Feb 22nd, 06, 2:45 PM I know there are issues with the drivers window as it's off the track and laying inside the door... the other three seem to work ok... I'm just planning on cleaning them and greasing them up. I just bought the handle removal tool the other day and will have the door panels off soon...then I'll be able to see what i've really got.
Thanks!
Ron
