guys thought I would give you this build up on a motor I did for a friend of mine. motor made 578 hp at 5800 rpm and 553 ft lbs at 5800 pretty wild never had one do that should be a real stump puller was amazed at how the power curve was just never dropped. I will try to post the graph and the dyno clip. The cam is a real small roller from herbert cams was gonna put a bigger one but it is a cruiser. Here is what I used

454 block .30 over-decked and sqaured-line bored
4" stroke crank
3/8 rods with arp bolts
square port heads pocket ported 2.25 intake s/s 1.88 exhaust
victor jr manifold-cleaned up gasket matched
950 pro system carb
1" spacer
moroso oil pan and pump
gear drive
10.1 wiseco pistons
herbert roller cam cbh3 596 in 595 ex 224 .50 224 .50 280 total
crane roller lofters
harland sharp 1.7 rockers

Nice - that's the power that comes with a roller cam - even a small one.

I second guessed myself on the cam I alwyas think bigger but this is for a car that can drive to dallas and back to houston on pump gas probably would have made more power but oh well we could alwyas hit it a 250 shot! LOL

Good numbers. Is that with GM heads like the 990s or aftermarket? Is that a HYD roller cam?

578 hp at 5800 rpm and 553 ft lbs at 5800

553#ft at 5800 would be 610 hp.

Sean,

Very nice work you did! Any dyno room stories? I see you ended up with a 1" spacer, I'd love to hear what else you tried and how much power you picked up or lost if you have the time to type it. :)

Your right 535 ft lbs my typo! It gained 8 hp with the spacer. Tried the timing at 35 to 40 and it really dropped off at 40 degrees by about 30 hp 37degrees was the best #. It only had 8 pulls on it so it kept making more power. carb was a little fat so proably could have squeezed a little more and probabaly should have put the cam in 2 degrees advance. It idels at 800-850 and sounds like a pussy cat. Sean

A 280° advertised solid roller cam with only 224° duration @ .05"? Sounds like a hydraulic roller to me.

RPM Range: 2200-6000
Advertised Duration: 285/285
Duration @ .050: 226/226
Lift: .595/.595
Lobe Center: 110c

The cbh3 solid specs arent too far off from that hydraulic roller.

Good Job. Someone told me once their method for cam selection was pick the one you think you need and then go one smaller.

This should suffice the the cam in question. If I am not mistaken they do not make that one anymore either. Is there a way to attach a picture of the cam specs from herbert from my book? Sean

Scan it or take a digital picture then load it from your PC to a host site. Provide a link in your post here or use html tags to show it right in your post.

 That's cool! Sean, you don;t need to "hit" that with anything just yet. Get the chassis to handle the hit of all that motor well, and go from there.

You might be suprised!
