Gents, I'm experiencing a new noise from my 66' . When I'm accelerating / shifting everything seems fine. However, when I let off the gas, it sounds like the tranny is gonna grind itself right out of the casing.... give it gas, the noise goes away. It almost sounds like its dry. I did check the fluid and it's full. We replaced the clutch, TOB, PP about 2 months ago, but this noise is new and just started. Clutch operation feels fine. Any ideas what could be causing this ???

Could be the mid plate bearing or front bearing, this is just a guess. Hard to say without looking inside or taking it apart, doesn't sound good.

I took the ol' heap out for a ride today (rare 60' day in NJ ) , and what I thought was a tranny noise may be something else. There is a pronounced rumble when I let off the gas, the noise is so loud people turn around when I downshift !!! Once I accelerate it tends to diminish. It seems to happen whenever the car is slowing down, whether it's in gear, in gear w/ clutch depressed, or in neutral ( coasting ). I checked the rear and the fluid level is OK,,,nothing felt excessively hot to the touch. I do have a new puddle forming at the rear yoke. Would decelerating cause the driveshaft to shift into a position that could cause this rumble, and accelerating would "relax" the shaft and quiet the noise ??? Would decelerating put excessive pressure at the tail or the rear yoke ??? I grabbed the shaft and gave it a good yank...nothing feels sloppy, but I guess I can't rule out the U-joints... if it were U-joints, would it rumble all the time ??? Note: We replaced the clutch, PP, TOB about 300 miles ago. Could we have screwed something up in the driveline during the process ??? I'm really down because I'm afraid to even drive it...something is really wrong. HELP!

quick update. I did yank on the driveshaft again and there is some play from front to back ( maybe 1/2" of travel ) . I can slightly rotate it a few degrees too. Is that acceptible ???

Sounds like the pinion nut has backed off.

Where is the 1/2" front to back play? Is it your pinion yoke?

Thanks for the quick replies. The 1/2" of play is at the tailpiece. Not sure if there's play at the rear...( got too dark out, check tomorrow ) . How would I check / adjust the pinion nut ??? From previous posts, that's something that should be adjusted but not fully tightened ??? Thanks

Sounds very much like a pinion bearing has gone out. Just tightening the nut without checking farther is likely not wise.

In the tail piece, the extension housing of the trans??? That my friend is big trouble. I don't know how it's staying together with that much slop:eek:

Wally, you're scaring me. What would be the process you'd take to diagnose this ?? Is this a situation where I start replacing driveline parts until the problem goes away, or is there some specific area that I should concentrate on that could cause this excessive movement ???

If you have the trans out and all that play is in the extension housing of the trans, that is what needs the work, not the other parts of the drive line.

Maybe you should call me so I can get a warm fuzzy about the problem.
