quick question, theres a M-20 advertised for 300, without being able to drive it, is this reasonable? I think it was offered before as a M-22 but after doing a little research here we came to a conclusion it was in fact a 67 m-20. I'm trying to find out what the bottom dollar they will take for it, and if its reasonable and still available Sunday I may go and take a look. this would eventually be going in a 70 with a truck 454,3.31 rear, and 275 60 15. Any problems with this combo? Jim

Unless you have a lot of knowledge or a friend that says they do, be very careful about used transmissions. I've done several M22s that guys paid 800 for and then spent 1300 to get something they could use.

I don't deal in used parts much, hardly at all. There is a wide interpretation of what is usable in used parts.

I've been rebuilding Muncies for over 35yrs. I used to rebuild them and sell them for $250-300. Obviously, those days are long gone. Then, I used to sell my rebuilt Muncies for about $600. Those days are gone also. In recent years I routinely advised people that if they did not know the history of a Muncie, or, if they didn't know the capabilities of the person who had rebuilt it, then do not pay over $200-250. Well, now I have to raise that amount also. I would PREFER to stay between $250-300 for purchasing a REBUILDABLE Muncie. IT IS POSSIBLE to suddenly invest an additional $300-700 (over and above the purchase price), JUST IN PARTS, to rebuild a Muncie. That is, if you do the rebuilding yourself. BUT, if you pay an EXPERIENCED person, who is VERY knowledgeable about Muncies, his labor is going to be $200-400 (depending on the person).
So, lets say you buy a Muncie for $300, spend $500 on parts and another $300 to someone to rebuild it------------------------suddenly, you're in it for $1100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You think I'm out of line? Ask Wally.
BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT, is is also possible that the tranny is in good shape and just needs a rebuild kit and it gets properly rebuilt, by yourself. Thus, $300 for purchase, $180 for a rebuild kit. Total, $480, and its a good Muncie. That's good (if you're lucky)!
Muncies are NOT, repeat, NOT getting any cheaper.
Want a BRAND NEW one? Aftermarket brand new Muncies start at about $1800.
ALLLLLLLL of my cars have Muncies, I love 'um (except my 455 Cutlass, it has a Richmond 5sp).

I bought one from a 66 pontiac for $300 with the shifter. The internals look OK when looking through the side opening, but a closer look will happen before it goes into a car.

Trust me, you CANNOT, CANNOT, CANNOT determine the overall condition of a Muncie by removing the side cover and visually examining the internals. CAN'T BE DONE! You've GOT to disassemble it and inspect all the internals, bearings, needles in the cluster, etc.
OR, you can just put it in the car, drive it and see what happens. AND, there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing it this way------------BUT, if it has a problem(s), then you get to pull it back out and tear it down anyway! I've done this with many Muncies over the years, but then, I rebuild these trannys almost blind folded------------most people don't have this kind of experience with them.

I just went to my friends and he just dropped a 396 in a 75 nova. I think the dark side is calling. I think instead of a 4 speed swap I may just start picking up parts to finish my 396 and drop it in my camaro. I figure it should cost less than the 4 speed swap. Jim
