hi everyone, hope you all had happy & safe holidays. my question is what torque converter would you recomend for a 454ci (500+hp) chevelle turbo 400; 355 or 373 rear end; 8" x 15" tires? I want to be able to drive comfortably, not racing from stoplight to stoplight. thank you in advance. phil

Not sure if I should answer this dont know if the board will think Im advertising but I will test the waters. We make a street performance 9 inch that would work reall well in your combo. If you are never going to race it and are just looking for a just off stock replacement we also offer a few others. Wich one are you looking for and I will try to give you some more info.

My take is he is looking for something in the 2500 - 3000 range, that has minimal slippage by 3000 and is locked up hard by 3500.

I think you should give us specs on the camshaft ,compression ratio, carb & intake .This would really help with an educated guess!!

Not knowing the specifics on your engine, I would say 2500 RPM for street driving and cruising. Street/Strip would be be better with a 3000 RPM. JMO :D

My combonation is close to yours, I put a B&M 3000 in my car and wasnt happy with it.
To loose at lower RPM, I just put an ATI Streetmaster in yesterday, what a difference.
The car pulls at lower RPM like a BBC, instead of slipping to 2500-3000 then going.
Dont get me wrong the B&M moved the car a 1500 and would hook up hard when ya gave it good throddle, I just wasnt happy with it slipping all the time.

TC, that ATI Streetmaster, is that the 10inch Brian (above) mentioned? Whats the working RPM of that Converter ?? I'm interested

Brian mentioned "Treemaster" TC installed a "streetmaster" ATI's lower end converter. I've used B&M "holeshot" converters, a 10" Tree master, and this year an ATI 8" Treemaster MRT, I'll let you know how the 8" converter works  The others worked great.

Yes as bob pointed out i mentioned the treemaster. I street drove my car as far as Island Dragway (2 hour ride for me) with the 10" Treemaster.

Nice converter it would pull away from a stop by just letting off the brake.

I've had two 8" treemasters in the car, one looser then the other. One of them required alot of RPMs to move, the other is pretty easy to deal with.

Yes I said "Streetmaster" and it is a 10" converter #408330.
They just went off sale last week, reg.561.94 cost me 402.00 shipped.
The Streetmaster and the Treemaster are build in the same way, same quallity, and alot of the same parts, thats what I was told anyway?
I love it, the car is a blast to drive now, it pulls hard everywhere and feels like it has alot of power, not slipping all the time.
When ya stomp it from a dead stop the RPM's go to 2500-2800 and it goes.
It's how I imagine a 468BB car to drive, feels like you are driving a powerfull car, not a car wth a transmition problem.

What you described is exactly what I want in a torque converter! I just bought my car, and the stall is too much for me. I was told it has a TCI 3600, but in the stack of receipts I found a TCI 2400 was purchased at one time. It definately feels like a 3600 though.

That Streetmaster you listed says it's a 3000-3500 stall? Seems weird that it would pull better at lower RPM's than the B&M 3000?

Also, the price is at $409 now.

There is no compairson between the ATI and the B&M, all I can tell you is what happened with "my" car, and every car is going to be different.
My 3000 B&M in a different car with mabe a 350 may act like my ATI in my car?
I didnt see where the converter I bought was rated at 3000-3500 stall, I seen where it was advertized as 400-800 above stock.
I think stock is 1500-1800? so that would put it at 2000-2800 and thats what I was looking for, only it had to be tight down low.
I told the sales person what I had and what I wanted it to drive like, and this is what he suggested .
I know I could have spent more and probably gotten a better converter, but it's not in the budget rite now.
I ask about the differences between the Streetmaster and the Treemaster and have been told the Treemaster has "ALL" new parts including the case, where the Streemaster uses a core case with all new insides and snout.
So for the money I am more than happy, especially the way the car goes.
Converters to me are something you can spend alot of time and money on and still not get what you want, it's not cut and dry, it's pick and hope.
Hope this helps?

I too am shopping for a 3000 stall converter for a TH350. I can't seem to find a consensus on what companies are reliable when it comes to mid priced converters($350-$600)

I've ruled out a few due to horror stories and bad performance, but it still is a hard decision. I just can't justify a converter that cost as much as a Coan, Chance, etc... with my POS engine

Bob also after you try out the car you can send it back to ati and tell them to adjust as needed, Let them know what its doing, My one friend did that and it worked even better...mike
