Hello all,

Its been a while since our last post. We have a 67' Chevelle SS 396, 4 speed, Black on Black project car (brought from Arizona to our place in San Diego) that we are pulling off of the frame. Sadly, the trans hump on this car been cut about 7" lengthwise & the firewall is bent from when the previous owner, while replacing the 396, allowed the replacement engine to swing into the firewall when the hoist chain partially broke. Rather than straighten the firewall, I'd like to replace it along the seam. Because this is a non-A/C car, we know we'll need a replacement from another non-A/C car. But what about the clutch Z-bar hole? Our firewall has the steering & z bar holes, but what about holes on a non-clutch or an auto car? Are these holes there as well, or are there knock-outs that might be in place (say, if a common die was used) that could be removed for a clutch car?

Thanks for any info or help!

I converted a '72 Chevelle from an automatic toa straight drive and the hole was allready there. I'd say the same for the '67 which I have also.(4-speed)

Bad Rat,

Thanks for the info. I've been told the same off-the-cuff, but would prefer to get a more authoratative answer. FYI site looks good but your url needs to point to a DiG name of .com, not .html. Just for FYI, good idea on the site though!

Thanks!

Yes, auto and standard are the same firewall. Clutch rod goes through the plate around the steering column. There will be a little L bracket for the clutch rod spring, but that is easy to remove from the old firewall and put on the replacement. Other than that and a hole for the back up light wire same-same.

Peter,

Thanks for the info. Having confirmation from more than one owner helps to reassure & makes the hunt for the replscement a little less of a pain. I'll be happy to post updates as they happen. Thanks again!

Is your 67 a console car or a bench seat car? I just repaired the tansmission tunnel on my 67 bench seat 4 speed car. It had been cut beyond the tunnel cover and I had to form new metal and replace it. FYI, if you have a bench seat car there is not a reproduction tunnel cover available. Most of the aftermarket suppliers show the 64-67 tunnel cover being the same, but this is incorrect. Because of the slope of the chrome bezel the flat top tunnel cover for the 64-66 will not work. I had to send two different covers back to True Connections before they realized their supplier was wrong.

Dave,

Thanks for the heads up. This car is s bench seat, non-console SS. The trans hump in this case has been cut laterally from front (firewall) to back about 6 inches. I have a replacement trans hump coming, which should patch into that area quite nicely. The shifter hole/cover has been hacked by the same moron, but it is a replacement item via OPG or Goodmark, so I'm not too worried yet.

You're site is very informative & I hope to have mine up in the near term.

Thanks again for the heads up. I'll inspec the replacement piece carefully.
