: Manual steering conversion

I will be eliminating my power steering from my 70 Chevelle and going manual.
*
Does anyone know if the s-10 manual box works? I have heard of the s-10 power steering working for a quicker ratio.
*
So where could I locate a manual box? and need steering components? I think the drag link and pitman arm need to be changed as well.

Thank you!

Yes, the S-10 box will work. There is some differences in them. Some had a small output where the pittman bolts up and some had the larger size. The larger size is the same as your P.S. pitman arm, so it will bolt right on.
I used a box off a 92 or 93 S-10 and it worked fine, no need to change anything else. Good luck.

Well I will be seeing more track time and will most likely use front runners.
*the car is an original SS so at this juncture I will hang on to my power set up.
* Would you be willing to sell yours?

As for bolting it to the frame... are there any issues with using the old bolts? Is this swap clean? metric?
Thanks,

Well I honestly do not know the value of the manual set up. And I DO not want to insult you by any means. Would just the box swap or would it be the pitman arm and drag link? Shipping would not be cheap I would think....
Alledgedly the s-10 box will swap out with no changes (per prior posts...) and I know I could get one of those at a local yard for under $30.00.
Would $30.00 be insulting?
Thanks,
Brian

I bought a manual box for 20.00 from a 70 Chevelle, I had to get a pitman arm from www.powersteering.com for 49.00. I have yet to drive it, but it has to steer better than a ps box with no pump, just not as quickly, going from 3 turns lock to lock to 6 turns :(

Just a question...
Will the S-10 manual box fit a '68 Nova also? I have power and was thinking of going to Manual with my BB conversion.

What years are usable?

I am unsure what would fit a Nova... the s-10 is from 82-93 for the Chevelle.

Yes it will fit the Nova too. The main thing is to make sure the pitman shaft is the same size as your pitman arm. Good Luck.

YES!!!!

The 83 s-10 manual box bolts directly up!!! Used my old Pitman arm from the Power steering unit!!!

Slick!!

Thanks everyone for the insight!!

Read this thread and went and got box out of a 87 S10 had to change rag joint and piece that goes on the splines of the box
( s10 box had smaller splines) works great in my 69 chevelle. Had a power box with no pump before the swap. Thanks for all the great info.

almost all gm power/manual boxes interchange, ford even used saginaw manual and power units in their vans for years, there were a few changes over the years. going to manual not as trickey as the other way as you have the issues with metric lines starting in the early 80's, i just swapped a manual S10 gear into a 79 Z28, simple bolt in reused everything, Rob...
