: Home made bushing removal tool
MJRIBEIRO Jan 16th, 06, 5:28 PM Here's a picture of the tool I made to remove the rear bushings. It's a copy of one I read about here, with a slight improvement. The main parts include a piece of 1/2 thick all thread, a few nuts, washers, and a 2" to 1" black pipe reducing coupler (probably could have just used a 2" coupling, but this was all Home Depot had.
You will need to remove the threads in the 2" side of the pipe fitting to clear the flange side of the bushing. About 5-10 minutes with a die grinder does the trick.
Don't forget to use some kind of spacer when removing the bushings from the UCAs - you don't want them to collapse. This tool works well for installation too - although it doesn't work well on the drivers side axle housing bushing - not enough clearance. Just use a piece of 2" pipe and a BFH to install that one.

charbilly2001 Mar 5th, 06, 8:48 PM Look at the tool MJRIBEIRO made. The reverse of that could be a press to force the bushing in. Its time to get creative.
MJRIBEIRO Mar 6th, 06, 2:10 PM charbilly - that was the intent - the only place that didn't work was ear on the driver side axle. No clearance for that big pipe fitting to help in the installation of the new bushing......

Billy 2 Mar 7th, 06, 4:55 PM I would just fill the bushing with grease, and use an old transmission input shaft cut the gear off of it and put it in the bushing .then take a hammer and hit it it will compact the grease forcing the bushing out. you will have to put grease in a few times but it will back the bushing out. MJRIBEIRO Mar 8th, 06, 8:27 AM Billy - your describing a very good method for removing a pilot bushing from a flywheel - but I don't think that process will work for the rear control arm bushings.

Excellent tool, just made one and pulled the bushings on the 12 bolt right out. I put the new rubber bushings in the freezer and will attempt to install tomorrow. Thanks for the posting of the tool.
Keith Tedford Dec 15th, 06, 10:20 PM I made a unit similar to the one above and ground the side for clearance so that it would work on the other side. Worked for me. To remove the old bushings, I did like one of the posts above, drilling out the rubber then driving out the outer shell. You can cut most of the way through the shell with a hacksaw to help collapse the shell. I was working on the rearend out of the car.

We tried that trick one day for about 2 hours then we just doug the bushing out , all it would do was to bounce the shaft back out at us.
As for the bushings I'll stick with my home made press shown here in red with leftover Craftsman stickers on it.

I'm going to try this setup on a leaf spring job, hope it saves us from taking the whole set of springs out just to change bushings, I hate dealing with those U-bolts!
pdq67 Sep 8th, 09, 10:08 PM I have to say that HFT's CHEAP Chinese 3/4" socket set is a daNDY TO USE TO DO THIS KINDA STUFF W/, ALONG W/ A HANDFULL OF WASHERS, SOME ALTHREAD AND SOME NUTS AND A BIT OF GREASE!!
