: Blew through 1/4 panel welding. How do I fix it?

I goofed last night. I have practiced welding and have improved and am starting to get a good feel for it. However, I blew through a piece at the point where the 1/4 panel meets the rocker panel. Now what. Can I just repair it by adding weld or can I weld in a small patch. The good part is that this is not a highly visible area in the middel of the quarter panel. I have a spot welder, can I spot weld in patch panel in and grind down the seams?

how big a hole is it?? you can just weld it back up.I've filled in holes the size of a quarter before (hole for antenna) what you want to do is turn the heat to lowest setting, and just put a ball of weld in a circle around the hole, if that makes sense. dont try to do a continious weld. they way I do it is I will make a ball on the edge of the hole the size of a pea, let it cool until the red is gone and put another pea size ball right next to it. work your way around the circle until the first and last weld meet and then start the process all over again.I've learned to weld a bead and I move my gun into position for the next weld. when I cant see the glowing metal through the welding shield I stick the next bead and continue this cycle until the hole is gone. takes alot of practice to weld metal as thin as the panels on cars.

If there is access to the back of the hole, place copper behind it. The weld won't stick and the copper has some heat sink benefits.

I have a section of copper pipe that I flattened the end of for just such problems.

What if I cannot get behind the area?

Just build up the area with weld. Take your time and don't over heat the area.
