: Starter wires

The car is a 72 Chevelle with a stock 350. I yanked the motor and the pics I took of the wiring are just off from the areas that I need(of course eh). If you guys could help me fill in the blanks that would be great.

Does the big purple wire on the underhood harness go to the starter? onto the same pole as the big red wire?

Also... The yellow/pink wire combo that goes to the coil....What are the other ones that are in the underhood harness if any?

If one of you could snap a pic of the wires on your starter/solenoid that would be great! Same with the ignition coil.

Thanks,

The large purple wire goes to the starter terminal marked "S" not the battery cable terminal. There also should be a "yellow" wire that goes to the "R" terminal of the starter.
The coil "+" side has a yellow wire that comes from the "R" termial of the starter and a white or purple wire that comes from the bulkhead fitting. The coil "-" terminal goes to the distributor.
If your vehicle has been "converted" to HEI sometime in the past the yellow or white wire might be eliminated or tied off somewhere.
An Assembly manual or a wiring diagram book may help you with other wires. I currently am trying to get a clear answer on TH400/Cowl induction wiring myself.
Hope this helps.

I believe on a 72 there is also a big red wire on the same post as the positive battery cable that supplies main power.

Ya, I have the battery cable going from the battery down... Then I also have a red wire that is split from a relay on the firewall. One wire goes to the alternator, the other must go down to the starter. Then the purple must go on this post aswell?

The yellow I am deleting because I have a 03 6.0l in there. Its just a matter of getting the starter wires hooked to the new starter. LABEL YOUR WIRES haha.

I have no idea what a "03 6.0l" is but like FTG53 said, the purple wire goes on the starter's "S" terminal (small post closest to the block) not on the post with the battery cable.

That starter should only have one small post, put the purple wire there and all should be good, the eye isn't large enough for it to go anywhere else. The other red wire should have an eye large enough to fit on the battery cable terminal. Are you referring to the horn relay above the brake booster as the source for the red wire? If so that will be a main power feed coming up from the starter.

Dean I beleive he is saying he installed a 2003 6 liter engine in his car.

DUHA, I should have know that especially since it's in his signature :o

I was thinking it must be some sort of hi performance ignition system.
