: What good are these fake lights?

Okay, I was under the back-end of the Sprint today, checking bulbs and stuff. I have two red-lens lights (or so I thought) in the bumber on either side of the license plate. Since they weren't lighting up, I pulled the cover. No guts! Nothing inside, except a housing with no holes, no wires, no nothing!

What are these for, and why are they there? They look like they should be backup lights, except the lenses are red!

I don't really care, just curious...

I think that these are reflectors and were probably put there to comply with a federal requirement.

I agree with JW. Sound like these were installed as saftey reflectors.
Are they OEM equipment, or did someone add them?

Those are reflectors. This is where the reverse lights were located on 68 El Caminos, they just didn't bother redesigning the bumper so they stuck a reflector in the hole.

You think it'd look cool if I grab a pair of light fixtures (like for the '68) and install them as running lights? Maybe another set of backup lights would be good.

Hmmmmmm...
