: What colour to paint a 69SS
69CHVL Feb 15th, 02, 10:18 PM Hi there:
I know everyone says that a colour of a car is up to the
Individual – but I would like to get some opinions from
Fellow chevelle owners – I have a 69 SS and I’m thinking
About having it painted Dodge Viper Blue – do you
-think this colour is too wild – I don’t want to make a mistake
- having a colour that might be too “new” for an older car.
Like to hear some opinions.
budruski Feb 15th, 02, 10:40 PM its all in a personal prefrence. i tend to stay with the original color on a true ss car, but sometimes that color can give me a headache. mine was the light metallic blue (had to change it). that viper blue is a sweet color though, especially in the sun. i think it would look good on a 9. go for it

Don_Lightfoot Feb 15th, 02, 11:08 PM I agree, that color should look http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif on a 69 SS. Of course, any Blue is alright with me http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

69CHVL Feb 16th, 02, 2:51 PM Thanks so far for replies....I guess what I'm really asking is dodge viper blue going to be an OK colour for along time - I plan on painting car only once..lol for a long time.
Seriously, IMHO, I think you should paint an SS an original '69 color. How about Lemans Blue? Just my .02 worth.

69SSGA Feb 18th, 02, 1:48 PM I believe that color would look just fine. Are you going to add stripes? As stated many times its your car, paint it the way you want too because in the end you will have to live with it. I have seen a similar blue on a 69 and it looked good, not sure if it was viper blue though.
Good luck with your choice...and send us pics when its done....

Jimmy P Feb 18th, 02, 2:38 PM I am a bona fide lover of 69's http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif Since you asked for my opinion I will offer it and back it up with many repaints, frame offs and restoration work behind me for experience.
Even though the color is eye-catching and attractive, It's going to be less pleasing to the eye as time goes on. Less pleasing to to the overall appreciation of the car in general. Here's why:
You will see that that certain shade of blue 'belongs' to more to the Mopar and Ford marque. To my knowledge, Chevy never offered anything close to that shade of blue.
These days, it's a FAD color, although nice.
You will see many 60's/70's classic Chevelles in their factory colors and may come to appreciate factory colors more and more as time goes on and you show your car next to the factory colored cars.
People will ask, "What color is that? You will respond, "Viper Blue!" You may not always get the response you desire or think you'll get from the folks that ask. Maybe that won't bother you, maybe it will. Only you can answer that.
If it is indeed a true SS car, you will be diminshing it's value, wheather you decide to sell it or not. In 1969 you have 6 different shades of blue to choose from. Bright blue is popular and looks great (My personel favorite). Winward blue and dark blue are closer to the viper blue though. What is the original color of the car?
http://www.chevelles.com/years/69/69paint.html
I've seen (and painted) some cars with modern colors that looked good, but in less than a year, the owners sold them, became less interested in them or re-painted them due to a moment in bad judgement.
I did a 67 camaro in Corvette Admaril Blue. Kind of a slightly purplish blue. Looked great, but when he took it to a show, it looked out of place next to the other stock colored Camaros. He put it up for sale the next week. Two months later he bought an original lacquer paint 68 Camaro.
It's ultimately your decision. What do you REALLY want? Good luck and let us know what color you decide.

Shawn Feb 18th, 02, 9:58 PM Definitely go with the original color, there's so many blue, black and red Chevelles out there already. Also, if it's an original SS, definitely keep the factory color whatever that might've been. If it looked good in 1969, then i'm sure it would still look good now.

69CHVL Feb 18th, 02, 11:59 PM I'm not concern on true SS colours...Its currently painted a bit deeper blue than lemans blue - I just hope that "viper" blue will suit the car for years to come - I think viper blue is really an old colour? that fords used...thanks for input..keep it coming.
