: stripping a rear end housing?
hoffbug Dec 11th, 02, 4:26 PM Hi.. I Dont know what forum to put this in, so Ill try here first..
Is a caustic soda bath OK for stripping a rear end housing?
Will it eat the metal or plastic?
Thanks, Tony
Randy Mosier Dec 11th, 02, 5:07 PM It's not too kind to plastic, but what plastic parts are we talking about? It should be stripped down to the bare housing.
The metal parts will do just fine.
hoffbug Dec 11th, 02, 5:57 PM The only plastic part is the little vent tube.. If it mets Ill just buy a new one.
I don't know what kind of finish you are looking for...a bath sound $$.
What I usually do, it use a wire brush to knock off any looose crap, seal the axle tubes and pinion hole up. Hit it with Castrol Degreaser (purple bottle), gotta rinse it off with water good. I think there is a bio-degradeable version out there. Might take a couple repeats.
Do this a few times, and it is clean enough to sand blast.
Then I hit it with POR-15 or use epoxy primer, scuff and chassis black.
sevt_chevelle Dec 11th, 02, 10:23 PM Tony, that bath will eat everything away just leaving you a nice clean rear end. If my memory services right I belive there is a redi strip facilty in the twin cites that will dip it fairly cheap. If you are looking for the home version I buy some red devil toilet cleaner, Ive seen it most hardware chains, mix with some water and it eats away paint and rust.
Once you have it clean rinse off with water then prime with a self etch primer and then paint...Eric

Keith Tedford Dec 12th, 02, 4:17 AM POR has everything you need. The degreaser, metal ready to get rid of the rust and the paint. Not cheap but seems to work ok.
hoffbug Dec 12th, 02, 8:41 PM Thanks guys..
Doing this at home isnt an option. I have an unheated, single car garage http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif
There used to be a place called IMS here in the 'cities that did a rust removal/stripping process that involved submersing the metal part in a liquid of some sort, and running an electrical current through it.
Does anyone know of this process?
Is it the same as the caustic soda bath?
I had a rear end housing done with this process some years ago and the results were amazing.

MonteMan454 Dec 13th, 02, 12:36 AM I got mine sandblasted. I had all the brakes off it etc. It came out very good but MAKE SURE you plug the vent tube hole. I didn't and had to steam clean the housing out and then pay extra to clean it out even more.
daveseitz Dec 14th, 02, 9:27 AM Tony is it surface rust or paint? I heard Scott at IMS closed but there are easier ways. Muratic acid is cheap and works great with just a spray bottle. If you need help or heat let me know.
GarageLogic Dec 14th, 02, 4:51 PM Try Precision Paint & Rust Removers in Long Lake. I had him dip my housing and the results were better than anything I could muster at home. I think it cost something like 50 or 60 bucks.
