: Rust in system

This is not about my Chevelle, but it is my tow vehicle. I have a 1988 Silverado 1500. The engine is a 350 tbi and the transmission is the stock 700r4. I had to replace a head gasket, recently, it appears to have rusted out between number 3 and number 5 cylinder. When I drained the coolant it was very rusty looking and as soon as I filled the radiator with a 50/50/ mix it looked as bad as what was drained out.
Is there a good safe way to get the rust out of the system, i.ei. block radiator, and heater core, other than filling up the system 3 or 4 times, bringing it up to operating temperature and draining it?

AT,
It would probably be a good idea to run some cooling system cleaner through it for a while, then drain it and refill a few times with fresh water before filling it with antifreeze. I have never used it, but several shops around here say that the BG Products Flush is the best stuff they have ever used.
Hope this helps,

I had a problem like this once on a 79 lincoln I bought with a 460 it sat with straight water in it for who knows how long i used a flush to remove rust and it removed it and placed a big peice in one of the water jackets in the pass. side head and i eventually overheated one piston and BIG KABOOM!!!!! the motor kicked ass during this process of slowly dying. and i didnt know what caused it until I tore it down.

Last ford I had

Bill,
What would your feelings be about the post by 64malss. That was my only concern. You have done this a lot more and longer than me and I will rely on your judgement. Thanks
