: Painting valve covers...

I've got a 350 with the new vortech heads and some late 80s Camaro centerbolt valve covers. I'm not sure, but I think they may be aluminum. Anyway, I'm looking for recommendations as to what type of paint to use on the valve covers that will look good, cover nicely, and be tolerant of the heat.

Thanks for all your help,
Chris

Powdercoat!

Powdercoat would be ideal, but I don't really have the facilities to do that. (yes, my girlfriend would kill me if I used the oven in the kitchen) http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif I'll check around town to see how much that would run. I was thinking of maybe using Por-15, or something similar. Like I said, just looking for recommendations. I had a spare valve cover that I used for testing with some cheap high temp spray paint, and well... the results were nothing short of disasterous... lol. Even though the valve cover was clean of any oil or other dirt, grime, etc., the paint still didn't stick well. Which is why I've come here to ask the pros.

This is something I'm kinda an expert at. I have painted my valvecovers at least 4 times. Always change my mind about the color. Anyway I sandblasted the aluminum covers and cleaned them very thouroughly. Then I used VHT engine paint on them. They look pretty good.

Sandblast then thoroughly clean with brake cleaner inside and out, hang dry.

Heat with propane torch til almost hot to the touch then use VHT or other Hi temp paint. After paint dries, warm slowly with propane torch until smoke from drying paint lessens. All done.

Worked on a set of racecar headers, should work on a valve cover.
