I am going to attempt to paint my car. I was wondering if I used a $45 paint gun from Home Depot if it'll turn out good? Is there anything else I should know before I try this??

Thanks
Nick

If it were me, I'd stay away from the really low-end "homer-homeowner" spray guns. They may spray varnish or shellac well but automotive paints and clears are a different story. Sometimes they are more troublesome than they are worth. Sharpe has an entry-level hvlp gun that in my opinion is a good bang-for-the-buck. It is called their Cobalt line, I've seen them priced in the $150 range (mabey less where your at). Most come with a fluid tip more designed for primers, but other sizes for base/clears are avail. I have one I use for a primer gun and I have been very satisfied with it. Just my biased .02

Nick, I also wanted to add that a good paint job depends on many variables other than just the spray gun. An expensive gun can produce the same results as a "budget" gun if not handled properly. Or in some cases mabey vice-versa. Good luck with your project keep us informed.

If you hit the Sharpe message boards ( www.sharpe1.com (http://www.sharpe1.com) ) you can ask "Dr. Gun" about thier refurb program, and buy a HVLP "Low Volume Platinum" spraygun for about 150 bucks.. This gun will work from a compressor that can handle a 7.9 CFM airflow which means most smaller home compressors can spray with this gun very nicely. I absolutely am happy that I found and bought this gun, I have had excellent results.. Take a look (http://animalhospitalofwhiting.com/chevelle/bike/)

I had a bad experience with the Divilbiss Finishline II, it's an inexpensive gun but has a lot of parts and is difficult to clean. I'm sure thier high end guns are fine though.

I ended up getting a $400 Sata Jet 90 which did a great job. I could have sold it and got most of my money back but decided I better keep it around just in case.
