The Cherokee box will blt right in, if you already have the newer hoses and rag-joint. You will have to use your "Chevelle" pitman arm...

"If you are sure that the steering gear came out of a 1992 through 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee, (not a Wrangler or a Cherokee), then you can be sure that you have a 12.7:1 fast ratio steering gear.

It should make a good swap.

Here's a link to Jim's info.

yup the 92-98 ZJ (grand cherokee) boxes are a direct bolt in, just need rag joint and hoses.

i have a 96 grand cherokee, and love the feel of it. i cant wait until i get the box for the chevelle. and with i think its 2.5 almost 3 turns lock to lock, it makes for a real nice driver, and def easy to get in and out of spots, and easy to fight the wheel when getting it sideways.

Aaron,
Are you sure you have a quick ratio steering box? I thought the quick ratio boxes were 2.5.

My stock power steering box is 2.9 (lock to lock) I want to buy a 2.5 ratio but i don't know how to get one cheap. I have a total of three A body steering boxes. I don't waant to use a different coupler, so i was hoping to get my gear box converted.

My understanding is that the 2.5 and 2.9 are the same ratio. The 2.5 is the F-body box that has internal steering stops where the 2.9 does not. The 2.5 box won't make tight u-turns in an A-body.

Is there a prefered year of Cherokee box for heaver steering? There are two on Ebay right now for $45 and $25 shipping. I'm sure the boxes are fine, but most are by the same guy. All say 78,000 miles and use the same picture! What do you do to adapt the lines from metric to standard? Is the rag joint you need the one from a early 80's pickup?

brian, i have a 96 jeep grand cherokee that i drive daily. it has the box in it that will bolt right into the velle. i dont have the box for the velle yet, not until i get money together. the one in the velle is like 3.5 lock to lock. and i cant stand it, its way to sloppy.

from my understanding, 93-98 Grand Cherokee box's work.they are the same box offered from the V8 to the l6. i dont think a Cherokee Classic box will work. but who knows

I just did exactly this swap. You'll need the Jeep box, a Chevelle power steering pitman arm, and a new rag joint that fits the Jeep box. You'll also (obviously) need a power steering pump and hoses, brackets etc. I used a 1980 Camaro pump, and hoses. This was the first year for the Camaro to use the new o-ring style hose ends, that fit the new Jeep boxes. 79 and earlier camaros used the older flare fittings.

Lee Manufacturing out of california will sell you the rag-joint, and they also offer adapters that will convert the new o-ring boxes to work with the older flare fittings. I think it was $87 for the rag joint and the fittings.

Thanx bulb 122 but where could I find a 65 power steering pitman arm, not one in any local wrecking yards. Are there any other years that might work
