Still trying to figure out if changing my stock cam in my 1972 chevelles 307 is worth it. The motor is out and evrything is off and painted.(intake, oil pan, timing cover) There is 54,000 original miles on it. Is it really worth the $75 dollars and a few hours to bump up the cam to the next higher lift? With that few miles on the motor is it even neccesary or worthwhile?

If the motor's out and you want to step it up a notch this is the time to do it.

I bet a good old CC 260HE will do you nicely too!

The car has the stock 2:73 gears and will have a slightly above stock converter. My concern is it even worth it due to being a low mileage car and I really dont want to have to worry about a cam break in problem

If its already out, I would definately change it!

I had a 307 in my '71 malibu the the previous owner installed a cam (he didn't know what brand or the specs but it did have a nice little rumble in the idle), a set of headers and a performer intake with a Q-jet and it was suprisingly peppy for a little motor.

But, buy far the biggest performance gain came when I installed a Transgo shift kit in the TH350 tranny. It would bark the tires when it hit second gear with little effort. And, it had a 2.73 open 10 bolt rear! I bet with a 3.73 gear, it would have suprised many stock 350s.

I did have the tranny rebuilt for a strong 350 motor i was originally building for it so i imagine it will bark whether i want it to or not. I was going to install headers but just want it all stock looking. Gears are an option if i decide to spend more $$ on it. I guess I might as well put a cam in it. My concern is that the cam will go in by next week but i wont get the motor in and running for months knowing me. How will that affect the lube draining off the cam and lifters?

Use moly lube like Isky's REV-LUBE!

CAM, on both the lifter feet and the lobes/distributor gear only..

Won't have to worry at all about it! Also add a small bottle of good old GM's EOS cam lube too.
