: How do you remove the quarter panels?

Not ready to do this just yet, but I was curious how you'd go about getting the quarter panels off a '68-'72 El Camino. The bottom half is all rusted away so that's not a problem but the top half, all I can figure is use an air chisel to separate the spot welds under the bed rail, but then where it goes onto the roof and sail panel, I can't figure it out at all. I know at the top there's a lead seam, but I don't know where the seam goes from there, behind the drip rail or before it? Is there a lip under the back window? What about the door jamb, how do you separate it there (looks tricky)? I would be replacing it with a full GM quarter. Thanks for any help.

Shawn, first of all if you use just an air chisel to remove the spots welds you will make a mess of both panels, meaning that you will rip or tear them. Use a spot weld remover bit first, only drill through the quarter panel layer of metal.

Along the roof to find that seem take your da sander and sand down the paint to bare metal. The area that is a different color then the rest of metal is the leaded seem. To remove the lead get a torch and use very light heat and melt out the lead. Once the lead is out you will see the seem. Use that remover bit again but this time drill through the quarter panel layer of metal because its welded to the inner structure. You must remove the back glass as the quarter is also welded through there.

Quarter welds on top of the drip rail. Use a wire brush brush or a spot sand blaster to remove the chauk along the drip rail and to see the spot welds. The best way to remove those welds is using a cut off wheel and grinding down those spot welds.

The door jam area around the door striker there should be around 6 or so spot welds remove with the remover bit. Down along where the quarter meets the rocker there will be some spot welds. Where the quarter makes that seem on the bottom next to the rocker, the best way to remove that is cut above it with a cut off wheel and grind down the spot welds after the quarter is removed.
