BB_Mike Jan 6th, 06, 8:02 PM Too much suspense!!! Lay the hood on and get one snap shot from far away.
Those rims sounds like they wheren't cheap. I'm curious to see what the stance will look like. I guess the tires aren't in yet?
The paint looks very well done.
GRN69CHV Jan 6th, 06, 8:56 PM Nice. Where did you get the Stinger Hood?
Motorhead62 Jan 6th, 06, 8:59 PM WOW, I love the color and that L-88 hood scoop. Post more pics as you progress along.

You're right about the wheels. They aren't cheap. I actually just got the tires in today. They will be mounted tomorrow. NITTO 555 EXTREME 18" and 20". I want the hood on too! I still haven't got to see it on yet. We are finishing some minor engine cosmetic changes (billet pulleys, billet water neck, and mocking up a possible ram air system). As soon as I can have the fenders mounted, the hood will go on and I'll get some pics. Thanks for the compliments, the paint is House of Kolors Cinder Red Mettalic Base, Kandy Tangerine Candy Coat, Copper Pearl, and finally clear. Awesome in the sun. Thanks again.
Bowtieguys Jan 6th, 06, 9:54 PM Nice. Where did you get the Stinger Hood?
I actually had it hand made by a company that is no longer in business. It was a lot of work to get right. It is one piece and moulded underneath, not just a scoop of any kind. The hood latches and fit well during mock up. However, I paid $1000 to have it made, and have another $1000 in getting it where it is now. I think the visual effect will be worth it. Thanks for the compliment.

Sure thing. Thanks for the compliments.
BB_Mike Jan 6th, 06, 10:05 PM I just decided that I want to see the car in person, but only if it might make it chevelle-abration or a nearby show. There is no location in your profile. That's fine, but can you give us a region? Be my luck, you'll be up on some mountain in Canada. ;)
And don't go doing any burnouts with those tires... they aren't cheap either. :D

I'm going to try to make it to Chevelle-abration and I'll be at some shows in the south (Charlotte, Daytona Turkey Run, maybe Bristol Super Chevy). I live in Morgantown, WV (GO Mountaineers!). I'll fill out my profile better as well. Thanks for the advice on the burnouts, I want to soooo bad!

Thanks. I am hoping to be finished by the end (cross my fingers) of January. I'll be posting an update with outside (sunlight) pics hopefully in the next week.
Thanks again,

Thad Jan 12th, 06, 9:37 PM Killer hardware, nice workmanship, and very tasty choices on cosmetics.
Really dig the Corvette Stinger style hood. I think it will set your car apart in a see of cowl induction hoods.
Now if I could find one for my 68. :D

Thank you very much. I really wanted something different. I'll post some more pics later today. I may be mounting my wheels and tires, and we are going to get the car out in the sunlight. I'm planning on buying a 70 SS 396 Convert. Chevelle, wait till you see the hood for it.
Thanks,

Sgtpop Jan 14th, 06, 1:26 AM Rich, that is one nice 67. Hope to see you at some of the shows or at CB06. I really like that color. Keep us posted with more pictures when possible.

Thanks, and you will. That is, if it isn't sold by then. I have had A LOT of interest so far. I also have a twin to your car in my garage. It is a basketcase, but a 138 code 4 speed Granade Gold 67 SS. Your car is beautiful. I also bought my dad a 66 2 dr sedan Chevy II for fathers day last year, and we are getting ready to start on it soon. Thanks for the compliments and I'll keep the updates coming.
ejrempel Jan 16th, 06, 1:14 AM I was thinking a stinger hood would look great on my '75 Camaro. What a nice addition to your 'velle. Lovely.
Btw, how much is a paint job like that worth? Don't have to tell us if'n you don't want to.

I would really rather not say...sorry. I will say you will have at least $2000 - $3000 in just the paint and supplies alone. This would not include any disassembly, bodywork, prep, paint, or reassembly. I will be honest, it turned out to be very expensive. I agree with you that a stinger hood should look very nice on your Camaro. I like the idea of something different. Thanks for the compliments.
Bowtieguys Jan 17th, 06, 7:29 PM Got pics of the hood on it today (just set on) and the rear wheel mounted. Ride height is just right. I'll post the new pics sometime tomorrow.

BB_Mike Jan 19th, 06, 7:45 PM It's reaching 7:00pm your time. Judging by the number of times this thread has been viewed, there are some of us that have this day earmarked on our calendars. :D
Don't keep us waiting too long. ;)
Bowtieguys Jan 19th, 06, 10:40 PM Unfortunately it was raining when I went to take the pics, but I got what I could from the inside of one of the garages. The hood still has to have the emblems taken off and buffed, but I wanted to have it set on just to see it. I will have better pics next week.

BB_Mike Jan 20th, 06, 12:40 AM Yeap. Hood could use some rubbin'.
Do those tires even have air in them, or are they just thick bands of rubber? ;)
I'll stop pressing for more pictures. I look forward to the finished product.

Hood should be done next week as well as the wiring, and hopefully the rest of the interior. Press for more pics all you want, I appreciate the interest. And yes, your right about the tires, they are thick bands of rubber (35 series sidewall on a 20 inch wheel). Next set will have a bigger sidewall, but they actually look pretty good from the side. I am going to make a few adjustments to the ride height and get ready to run the crap out of this thing. I can't wait for the wiring to be finished so I can hear the Big Block again, it almost sounds like a Pro-Stock car. It's wild. Thanks again.
1offwizard Jan 20th, 06, 11:45 AM very nice!!! I love the color and the big wheels look great!

1offwizard Jan 20th, 06, 2:12 PM Thanks Rich. Your car will look incredible with an altitude adjustment!!! Big wheels were meant to be tucked.
Bowtieguys Jan 20th, 06, 5:42 PM Big wheels were meant to be tucked.
Agreed!
Bowtieguys Jan 24th, 06, 1:10 AM Just talked to the shop today, and my car may be done by the WEEKEND! If not, sometime next week. Some more pics and Video will be posted soon! I actually can't believe it. 7 years in the making! My first frame off with mods.

Rich, what size tires do you think you would rather go with?
I think I would try to get at least a 40 series sidewall, possibly a 45 series. I was a little hesitant to get those sizes in the beginning because I knew I was going to lower my car more. I now think I could lower it more and still have the room for a taller sidewall. I guess I will just have to burn the rear tires off pretty quick!
1966_El_Camino Feb 8th, 06, 3:51 AM YOur car is looking awesome, cant wait to see some more pics.
Just be careful with those little tires and a heavy car, I ruined many rims rolling on 40 series tires. Potholes and road debrie are not your friends. And it gets expensive quickly having to repalce all those rims.

I appreciate that. That's another reason why I would like to get a bigger sidewall. I don't think there are any potholes in West Virginia though (joke). Thanks for the compliment, and I will be updating the pics in the next few days, so keep an eye out.

Revs Hi Mar 24th, 06, 1:11 AM Bowtie...very nice car!! I'm doing a 66 Pro Touring Chevelle myself. I have a question on your paint. Did your painter paint the car in pieces or together? I want a Candy tri-coat paint job, but my painter only paints cars apart and he's scared it wont match. How was your car done?? Thanks Cary

Yes, they were painted in pieces. Everything was prepped, then painted in stages. They were painted in pieces but at the same time with the same amount of coats. Matches perfect. The candy paint is unbelievable. Thanks for the compliments. Good Luck and let me know if you have any more questions or if i can help in any way.
Bowtieguys Mar 24th, 06, 10:38 PM Any updates? Pics? Performance? Recommendations? Cautions?
Well the car was not completed as hoped. We had a wiring issue. I also had a custom set of taillights made and designed a custom ram air system for the car. The shop will be finishing the wiring soon, putting the interior in and it will be on the road very soon. It's hard for me to rush the shop because the weather is not great here yet anyway and I recently bought another Black/Black 67SS that I may retore to original, and I have been gathering parts for both the Chevelle and the 66 2dr sedan Chevy II that I bought for my dad. I'll be updating soon.

Bowtieguys Apr 30th, 06, 12:25 PM Here are a few. I'll be going to the shop this week. I have been out of town and the shop has been busy on other vehicles (part of an agreement we made). I'll get some new ones soon. Thanks for your compliments.

I basically had to have the shifter opening moved back about 3". I then had the front 3" closed in to keep the overall opening size the same. No matter what you may hear from Richmond Trans., you will have to have a driveshaft made/modified and the crossmember had to be relocated. Thanks for the compliments.

Hey man your not bugging me at all. I appreciate your interest. I have been asked to bring it for display at GM Carlisle, and I have spoke with Rob Kinnan, the editor of Hot Rod magazine. Once I send him some high resolution pics, you will get to see a whole lot more of the car. Thanks again.

Actually, that is a very good idea. I can temporarily put my 40 series Flowmasters on with dumps while the side exhaust comes in. I like your thinking.
Mike, you should consider a trip over to Florida the third week of June. I am taking the Chevelle with me on vacation and we could get together and run the crap out of it (as long as it isn't sold by then).

Actually, I will be back in Florida in August. I don't know what dates yet, but we make at least a few trips down a year. I'm going to check out a 55 Nomad in the Daytona area next month. Hopefully I'll find some good Chevelle parts while I'm there.
Bowtieguys Jun 2nd, 06, 10:12 PM I have my new wheels on the car now, and I am no happy with the front ride height. Any suggestions? The wheels are 18" and they look very small in the front wheel wells. If I lower it too much, the headers and exhaust may be in some serious trouble. I currently have Hotchkis 1.5" lowering springs all the way around, but I don't think it's enough. I have heard that springs tend to settle as the car is drove for some time, but will it make up the additional 1" to 1.5" that I think I need? Thanks for your help.

Daren71 Jun 3rd, 06, 5:40 PM That's a tough call, some photos it looks perfect, some a little too high. Why don't you finish adding all the extra weight (final assembly), take it for a cruise, then in a big open area where you can do a large walk around, see if you've changed your mind? Rich, the car looks fantastic. Daren

That's a good idea. The only thing is that I wanted to have the lowering done (if needed) before the rest of the car is finished so once it's out of the shop, it out for good. It probably would be a good idea to take it for a drive though. I think I'll do just that. Thanks for the advice, and thank you very much for the compliment.
Clint44 Jun 4th, 06, 6:52 PM The rear ride height looks ok but the front is definitely too high,IMO. The tops of the tires should be up in the fenderwell an inch or so.
If you're running Hooker headers, you have a problem.

So, in other words, there's not much I can do...right? I am running hooker super comps. They are definately going to cause clearance issues. I also have to consider the exhaust because it is going to be 3" diameter. I think I am going to run it, and try to lower at least another 1" - 1.5" after I drive it for a short period.
Scotch Jun 6th, 06, 12:39 PM I like 'em as low as is practical. Don't lose sleep over cutting a Hotchkis spring down a coil or so - they'll be fine. That front tire can tuck up into the wheelwell until the rim is close to the cutout for the fender. Then, lower the rear to be level.
The exhaust might require more engineering...the Hookers are notoriously low. I'd look into Stahl or Headers By Ed if you've got angle plugs. Hedmans are known to fit much tighter to the floor and offer more clearance.
You could also run shorty headers and have tons of clearance. You'll sacrifice a few ponies, but have no headaches. It's your call on the priority.
I'm still up for a shoot too - Let me know your thoughts...

Thank you. I think I am going to have the car lowered a half of a coil at a time. I'll see where it goes from there. I am going to stick with the hooker headers right now, but by the sounds of it, I'll be switching soon enough. I would love to have my car in your magazine, please let me know what we need to do to make this happen.
Thanks,

Bowtieguys Jun 8th, 06, 11:23 PM I've got a few more for you guys. The front is coming down about 3" more and the rear about 2". The paint is amazing in the sun. I'm off to Florida next week, when I get back...Tire smoke.

Not necessarily. On my former 68 El Camino with 468 and Hookers,I had lots of ground clearance problems. After having Coil Spring Specialties build me some 2" drop springs, the majority of the clearance problems went away. Later on,I installed a pair of Sanderson 3/4 length intermediate headers and they eliminated all ground clearance concerns. When the new 496 goes in my 69,those are the headers I'll be using again.

I think that I am going to order a set of OPGI 3" drop springs and give it a try, or have the Hotchkis springs that I have on it now "modified" slightly. I will more than likely be going with Sanderson headers on my next project as well. Let me know how you like the 496. My next engine is going to be an aluminum 496 or I may go to the opposite end of the spectrum with a twin turbo aluminum smallo block. It al depnds on the car. We are building an aluminum 427 small block for the 66 Chevy II sedan that I bought my dad, it will also have Sanderson headers.
496malibu Jun 12th, 06, 3:47 PM i have hotchkis in the front of mine i cut 3/4 coil and droped 1 inch or so. i would bolt everything up, hood bumper ect. then cut a coil and see where your at
gearbanger Jun 12th, 06, 3:49 PM I might have a set of springs you would be interested in. They are the 3" OPG springs, powdercoated silver and clear powdercoated. They look sweet. I was thinking of making some spacers to go under them but if you wanted them I could let you have them for $150 and I will just order the 2" drop ones.

I think that is exactly what I am going to try first. If that route doesn't satisfy me, I'll probably try the 3" OPGI springs. Thanks for the advice.

Thank you for the offer, but I think I'm going to try removing 3/4 - 1 full coil from the Hotchkis springs that I have. If this doesn't satisfy me, I'll proceed. Thanks again.

Bowtieguys Jun 24th, 06, 9:59 PM I received my new exhaust set up while I was away in Florida. This setup is sweet. I ordered a 3" Chambered exhaust setup with slash cut stainless side exit tips that will exit just before the rear tires. These are prototypes and have not been released in 3". I am excited to hear the chambered exhaust behind a 600 horse big block. This thing should be obnoxious. Here is a general pic:

I don't have complete pics yet, just because I make too many changes during the build, and it isn't 100% yet. I now have a new exhaust, and I have a new headlight setup coming. Check out the pics on page 6 of this thread. Thanks for your compliments. Your hood turned out great. Looks good. Keep up the good work and keep us posted with pictures.

First, let me say that I really really appreciate your compliments. It is very cool to hear from someone who really appreciates the look and style that I am trying to get. Thank you very much. Second, I really mean what I say about your car and the hood. I think it looks really good, especially on that body style. It has almost a baldwin motion look. I like the idea of bigger wheels on the right car. I have a lot of people knocking the fact that some people use above 18" wheels on a chevelle, but I think it can be pulled off nice. As far as the comments on weight and rolling mass, it really doesn't hurt when you are talking about a 600 hp big block.

All new glass installed in the car. I sent the window trim (front and rear) out for professional polishing and the quote was nearly $800.00...no way! So, I am going tomorrow to pick up the trim, deliver my new lock kit (doors, trunk and ignition on one key) to the shop, and pick up my custom pistol grip shift knob from the chrome shop. I am currently debating on headlights. I'm too picky, I know. Hopefully soon...
1972Custom Jul 8th, 06, 6:24 PM i have a question about locks........on my 72 the ignition ,and doors are the same......the glove box, and trunk are the same......most people i seem to ask say theres are all diffrent, but thats the way they think it came........not to worried, becouse i shaved mine.......just wanted to know...

The locks that were in it when I bought the car had the trunk and the doors keyed the same, but the ignition was different. I honestly don"t know how it should have been originally. I wanted new locks just because everything else is new. The one key idea is just for convenience. If I could get an answer to the steering question that I have under the troubleshooting section, I will have the car this coming week.
Bowtieguys Jul 12th, 06, 9:32 PM I got my centerlink and steering issue fixed, and now I'm trying to figure out what brackets I need to hold the e-brake cable up against the body. Custom driveshaft installed today. The exhaust is going on next. I'm going to try to go back to the shop and start it toward the weekend. Probably next week before it's in my driveway.
1972Custom Jul 13th, 06, 1:57 AM i saw your post under troubleshooting.......i was happy that the centerlink you got off the parts car worked.......i was going to answer earlyer about it, but my friend thinks his ls1 camaro comes first.........on the e-brake are you going to use stock style brake line clip/holder(one bolt half circle)????? i would be so excited that i would not sleep..........
Bowtieguys Jul 13th, 06, 9:42 AM on the e-brake are you going to use stock style brake line clip/holder(one bolt half circle)?????
That's what I am wondering. I do not have a refernce picture to go by. I can't picture how they are set up in my head. I know the cable goes down both sides of the car and connects to the rear bracke lines, but how do they stay tucked up under the car? Do these clip line holders that you are talking about mount to the frame? Thanks for your help and compliments.

I hear you on that too. They are awesome looking cars no doubt. I already have a plan for a 69 sleeper. Here are a couple specifics:
Burnished Brown w/ Black Interior
Radio and Heater Delete
Mini Tubs w/11" wide steel wheels with dogdish hubcaps
Twin turbo all aluminum 406 w/ a 6 speed.
It will be a while, but I'm actually already excited about building a Camaro now.

I sure do. I took some yesterday when we fired the car up. Keep an eye out, I will be able to post the pics and a video clip in a few hours. I accidentally left my camera in my wife's car. Chambered exhaust gets finished today, and I have a front end alignment scheduled for tomorrow morning. It's almost time to run the crap out of it.
Bowtieguys Jul 20th, 06, 5:32 PM I've got a few good video clips, but I am unsure of how to load them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The hood will be on tomorrow. Here are a few more. Nothing really changing from the last pics. The car honestly sounds like a NHRA Pro Stock car. It is violent. Really, really impressive. Yesterday, it was through open headers, today it was through 3" Chambered Exhaust. There is NOTHING like the sound of Chambered. I definately am not trying to boast at all, but I am very very happy. Here you go...Thanks for your interest.

Thanks for the compliment. I agree that the front needs to come down some. I talked to a rep from Hotchkis and he told me to drive the car for about a month before I make a decision to switch out the spings for lower ones. He basically said that the car should settle a little more. Even if it does, I don't think it will settle enough. I do have a problem though, my headers are really low under the car. As far as the pics go, i wish they were 5 years old because that would mean I have been driving the car for that long. i have a Sony Handycam and picture quality is just not there. It will have to due for now because all of my money will need to be saved for speeding tickets. Thanks again.
The car looks great, well, except for the hood. To me the scoop section is too far back and too short. It looks out of proportion for your Chevelle.
This one looks a littler correctly proportioned IMO:
VFN Fiberglass hood:

Of course they don't make the 67 hood for a direct comparison.
Maybe it is just the pics, get better ones please :)

The scoop does set back more than the VFN hood, but it looks a lot better than the angles of the pics might show. It actually looks great with the body lines IMO. I had this hood made as a one piece moulded hood, not just a scoop put on, and it is definately not an off the shelf item. It definately sets the car apart. Everyone likes something different than the next guy I guess.

I pulled in a parking lot and saw that I had sheared BOTH adjustable upper control arms off at the threads. They were both just hanging there and the rear was ready to bind (it didn't). I have really not drove the car hard, but it does pull VERY VERY HARD. I will be replacing these tomorrow, but I could not believe this happened. I guess my license plate says it best...BAD NEWS.

I think that I might drive a little cautious for a while.
Jr1964 Jul 30th, 06, 7:19 AM What control arms do you have on?
I've made the decision to get the 'Currectrac' adjustable uppers and the lowers also. Currie is only
a couple miles from me, saves shipping. These things are BEEFY!
No slam on Edelbrock by any means, but as far as construction, they don't compare. (had them
side by side)
If you bite the bullet, you won't be dissapointed!
Beautful car, by the way!!!

Those are exactly what I think I am going to go with. The arms that I have on it now are made by a machine shop in Ohio (I really don't want to slam their name). They looked very good when I installed them, but there are a couple of things that I haven't liked from the beginning. It looks like I will be biting the bullet. Thank you for your compliments on my car.
Bowtieguys Aug 1st, 06, 4:45 PM I installed a new 7 blade fan to help cooling. I also have a huge electric fan that I am going to mount in front as a puller fan. I am also trying to locate a place to mount my new radiator catch can. No space on passenger side of radiator. Any recommendations?
Bowtieguys Aug 3rd, 06, 12:24 PM Upper control arms fixed. I took it for a test drive and everything is fine. Going to put the stainless trim on this weekend and will be ordering new mirrors. I'm not really in a hurry now. I think I am getting burned out.
CRUZN68 Aug 3rd, 06, 12:37 PM Do you think you could get us a sound clip of the new exhaust?
Bowtieguys Aug 3rd, 06, 12:42 PM Do you think you could get us a sound clip of the new exhaust?
I actually have a couple. I have to figure how to load it to the site. It sounds nasty. I am very happy with the chambered exhaust. I will say that it is VERY load at high RPM's. The side exit makes it sound a little louder too. I will get the clips loaded ASAP. Thanks, and BTW great looking Chevelle you have.
BB_Mike Aug 3rd, 06, 2:12 PM Rich,
I would not mind hosting it on my club's website for a shortime. Just email me the stuff.
In order to host stuff on this Team Chevelle website, you need to me a member. I was "tech team" for about a year before becoming a member.

Don't say that. I think you have an awesome looking piece. I really like the color. I have a crazy color that I am going to do a future car in that is a wild version of the color of your car. Thanks again.

I actually got them off of a guy at the Carlisle, PA swap meet. A company called PML makes them. They are between $325-$350 a set. If you want a set PM me as I am going to be selling mine. BTW, thank you for your compliment on my car.
Thanks,
Rich
Bowtieguys Aug 7th, 06, 1:15 AM The car made it into the classifieds. I think I'm burnt out already.

I really have lost a lot of desire. I have done nothing but Chevelle's for the last 15 years. I'm ready for something else. Either 69 RS Camaro, 55 Nomad, or maybe something alse. It will be wild. I am considering modifying an AWD system from a Typhoon, Twin Turbo All Aluminum small block, and a 6 speed.

An interesting FYI for your next project, the C5 spindles are the same front and rear. Some have discussed using the C5 parts to make an AWD system.
Good luck on the new project

That is definately good info. Any good parts suppliers that you could point me toward? I have not had a chance to dive into the vette world yet, but sounds like this would be a great way to go. Thanks for the heads up and the good luck wish.

That would be awesome. Twin Turbo all aluminum small block, 6 speed, all wheel drive with 06 vette interior.

Great information. There are a ton of little things to think about when buiding an AWD, but i think the results will be worth it. Thanks for your interest and help.
Bowtieguys Sep 2nd, 06, 9:55 AM I have had a couple offers in the Chevelle and another person reviewing the engine specs and info. sent this Holiday weekend. I think it won't be too long before I am no longer a Chevelle owner. I recently sold 2 other 67 SS's that I had so it's down to this one. If it goes soon, I will be packing cash to fall Carlisle. So, if anyone has some quality cars for sale...feel free to let me know.

Yeah, I had mixed emotions, but I really want to put some serious effort into the 66 Chevy II 2 dr. sedan that I bought my dad. The chevelle has a new home in Massachusetts now. It was a really cool car.

Thanks Steve. I have been watching your build close. Beautiful car! Keep up the good work on the car and at work.
Bowtieguys Oct 5th, 06, 2:05 PM She's gone. No regrets. Already started on the Chevy II sedan. I'll keep the progress posted.
Brettd85 Oct 5th, 06, 2:29 PM Whats in store for the Chevy II? If you already said im sorry, I dont feel like reading 12 pages, again.

No problem. I understand that. The story is this... I bought a 66 Chevy II 2 dr sedan for my dad for father's day a few years ago. Together we are going to build a wild sleeper. The car will have a Heidt's front and rear subframe with subframe connectors, 4 wheel discs, a built aluminum 427 small block, T56 six speed, chambered exhaust, and 12 bolt with 3:90 gears. We have already gathered some really rare parts: radio delete plate, heater delete plates, rubber floor, 66 dealer accessory tach, NOS dogdish hubcaps, and more. The car will be painted either 66 corvette mossport green, or aztec bronze with color matched custom width steel wheels with the dogdish caps. I also just bought a set of nostalgic cheater slicks for the rear from Radir. I think it's going to be a really cool project. Thanks for the interest.
pist0lpete Oct 6th, 06, 4:05 PM That does sound like a cool project I can't wait to see it come together. Good luck!

Thanks a lot. I just can't wait to see my dad's face when he get's behind the wheel for the first time. He truely deserves it. He sacrificed a lot for his family including a 66 Nova SS. I think he is really excited. I know it's a chevelle site, but I am going to post the whole build. I'm actually really excited too. I think I was slightly burnt on Chevelles. I have another some day.
Bowtieguys Oct 19th, 06, 10:47 PM If any of you have any info. on the aftermarket front subframes for Chevy II's, please let me here your thoughts. I am looking at Heidt's, TCI, and Chris Alston.
Thanks

Because the person who bought it visits the site often, I will let him decide if he wants to let people know the figure. He might resell or something. I don't know. It was very close to asking price. Thanks
