I can get a 97 Suburban w/ what I have been told is a gen six 454. I wanna put it in my 71 malibu which now houses a 350/350. Summit racing claims edelbrock makes a manifold to put a holley on this engine. My question if anyone knows....is it a straight foward swap? Anyone done it? Eventually,I would like to uses the fuel injection also. Thanks

The vortec 454 is a grunt low RPM motor that is all done by 5k rpm. Not really a hotrod motor but it's street manners are nice. My 99 Burb is a 454 and I drive it way too much. 108k miles and it has not skipped a beat.
How much are they asking? Is it 2 wheel or wheel drive? While the intake swap woild be good, you will need a different oil pan and the you will need to run an electric pump for fuel as there is no mechanical provision. Not sure if the serpentine setup would work on a Chevelle. IMO if it isn't a cheap deal I would look for a different BB that wouldn't need a head swap to make it a performance motor. Good Luck.

It will be a big jump in power from your 350CI motor - because of the torque. Real HP may not be much more than 350HP gross. But it will have about 500FT LBs torque over a wide power band. For the swap, all you will need is a GENVI Chevelle oil pan kit (pan, pick-up and gasket). get it from any Chevy dealer for about 150.00. As far as the intake - any oval port intake will botl right up. You can pick up a used Ede Performer 2-0 for about 75.00 on Ebay. I have one I could sell you for the same - no reason to buy one of these new, they are very common used. Other than that, everything else is the same for the install, except you need to run an electric fuel pump. However, good part is, you will not need an expensive high volume pump. Pretty much any electric fuel pump will suffice.

Now, if I were in your position and you are getting the whole vehicle (I assume this is a wreck??), I would strongly consider the entire swap. EFI (use an inline pump - most likely you need to run new fuel lines anyway to support the bigblock) and use the OD trans. If you are up to the task of swapping over the electronics (basically running the wiring to the CPM - you could probably use the entire wiring harness from the Burb), this would be a sweet running swap, with a little hightech thrown in.

Good Luck.

I put a Gen VI in my 64 with the 700r4 trans and love the combo. I dont race the car its just a nice driver. pretty easy swap for me.

I have a Gen VI in my 72 and it was a pretty straightforward swap. You will need the new oil pan as mentioned. I have an Edelbrock Performer on mine with Summit headers. You will also need an electric fuel pump.

I thought it's only the 502's that need the electric fuel pump not the 454's.

Phil,
some had the provision for a mechanical fuel pump, mine did not.

The truck is a wreck, I plan on getting it for under a grand. I know the two guys who have owned it since new, and it has been well cared for. As far as HP and tourqe, I love Tourqe!! HP is ok but 500ft lbs is awsome. Thanks for the info on the oil pan kit.

If you can get the whole truck complete with CPM, I would do the entire motor/trans swap and keep the fuel injection. THe tranny is a bolt in swap for a T400. Pull the motor/trans as a unit, drop into your Chevelle, mount the CPM and connect the wiring harness that came from the Burb.

Is the Burb a 4x4? If so the 4l80e trans won't work for you. BUT that tranny has a very marketable value and you could end up with the 454 and stuff for next to nothing if you part out the truck. Since it is the 454 itsa 2500 and I could probably use a couple small things :) I'll kick you a PM.....

I thought it's only the 502's that need the electric fuel pump not the 454's.

Since FI has replaced carbs in OEM vehicles for years now. Everything is ran by an electric fuel pump inside the tank because of the need for higher pressure. Thus there is no need for mechanical fuel pump and the block does not need a spot for the mechanical fuel pump on the side.

I would part out what I didnt want on the truck and buy a cam and lifter kit for even more improved torque and HP. Then go after some cyl. heads sometime down the road. Those peanut ports dont flow to well.
