Hello,

I am in the process of sanding down my 1985 Monte Carlo SS (No, its not a Velle, but at least its a Chevy) and prepping it for paint. I am having a bit of difficulty deciding weather I should go with A Single Stage Paint or a 2 Stage Base and Clear. What I am trying to achieve is a High Gloss black,... a good example would be the type of coat you would see on a Buick Grand National. What are the benefits of going with either and which would best benefit me? The Car is going to be black. Thanks again for the input,

Dan

I've painted both single stage and BC/CC in black and in my opinion, the single stage is the way to go. It looks deeper when it's cut & buffed properly. The clear coated black looks a little hazy when parked side by side with a single stage painted black car.
When I painted my 69 Chevelle in a single stage black, here's how I did it:
After making sure it was as straight as I could could get it, I put on two coats of Glazurit black on.
Waited two days, then block - wet sanded with 800 grit paper.
I then applied another two coats of black.
Wet sanded with 1500, then 2,000.
Buffed with 3M Perfect-it.
Glazed it with Mother's glazing compound.
MacGuire's polish by hand.
It looked deep and mirror-like.
It's the only time I used Glazurit paint and I will say that it held up better than any other paint I've used. In over two years it never needed to be polished again and it seemed more impervious to scratches.

What would you say about other light non-metallic colors?
In the not to distant future I am going to be putting paint on my car (butternut yellow) and now this has me wondering, would I be better going single stage with this color??

(lol) What I take from this is that, Darker, Solid Colors are best for a single stage paint, but metallic colors or metal flakes are better off with 2 Stage. This is just what I take from whats been said in this Forum. If anyone could clarify this it would be interesting to know.

Another question from me --- What is the best Single Stage Paint to go with,... any preferred brands?

Thanks,
Dan

metallic single stages are very tricky, I would do bc/cc for metallics but for a solid color
the single stage is great and quicker to shoot.

Metallics and pearls need clear coat to look their best. Clear coats make metallics and pearls sparkle and create depth where it's needed.

Straight colors, paint without metallic or pearl, like red, white and butternut yellow, will look fine either way, but it's easier to paint with a single stage. Black looks better in a single stage. It just looks 'blacker' and darker creating more depth in appearance only.

At a Northern Regional Chevelle show earlier this month 2 of the best paint jobs there were Solid color single stage urethane ....Mike Crowns Danube Blue 66 and ED Pienta's Beautiful Deep Black 67 ......Ed is the PPG rep who gave me the advice re single stage for solids and BBCC for metallics ......above advice in this post is consistant with what ED told me ........ BTW both ED and Mike 's paint jobs are more than a few years old and they look truly outstanding

If my car was Butternut Yelow I would go Single Stage Urethane , any name brand paint should be good but make sure you get that brands premium line they make so many qualities now ... do your homework on the different lines within a brand .

Ed had told me a while back that black really looses depth in BC/CC.

Now as far as how old the paint jobs are I won't comment on length of time versus exposure time tongue.gif

Good Point, but we don't want to get Mike started on "kept" cars tongue.gif

Thanks for the info guys, I never even gave it a thought that single stage might be better. I just seen Ed's '67 again for the second time and all that I have to say is 'WOW', that car is as perfect as a car gets.
