: What paint/primer?

Hi ya'll. I talked to the local PPG supplier today and he recommended the folowing:

1 gal DP90LF & 2 qt DP402LF primer for the frame and under body.
1 gal K36 & 1 qt K201 for the body primer/filler.
1 gal DIT - DBC custom mix & 1 gal DT870 for the base coat.
1 gal DCU2042 & 1 qt DCX61 for the clear coat.

Grand total of $955. This is for a '69 Camaro. I'm wondering a couple things. Should I be using an etch primer under the K36? I plan on taking it down to base metal. Also, is this a decent price for all this? And is it enough to do everything? Thanks for your help. graemlins/beers.gif

The etch primer would be for ON the bare metal under the DP90LF. PPG has a strong belief (at least their marketing department does) in the epoxy primer as a foundation. Most other companies believe in etch primers under the urethane (K36) primer.

There are strong support for both sides. I personally feel that etch is a better choice being it is a better corrosion fighter and cheaper to boot. Now, if epoxy were ANY better, money would have nothing to do with it. As you have pointed out you have a thousand bucks in materials there, a few dollars either way is not going to make a difference.

But etch primer on bare metal, then urethane to "surface" prior to painting makes more sense to me.

So I should get some DX1791 for under both the DP90 and K36? Does this price sound normal? Living in Alaska, I always question the prices of stuff up here. Thanks.

Honestly, if I was spraying it over bare metal I would skip the epoxy. But, I live in sunny California and maybe you need all the corrosion protection you can get. If that is the case use the etch and epoxy and urethane. But I really think that is an over kill. If you have panels that are just near perfect, then the etch and epoxy could be all you need and just paint over the epoxy. But this is not likely, you will need to do some surfacing and the urethane will do that for you..

As far as price, if you give me the prices of the products individually, I can look it up for you.

Am an etch fan. Ive had PPG epoxy come back on me a few times, really bit me hard too. As for the etch I would go with the dx1791, the other etches PPG offers DPX171/172 cant be used under some products! I dont recall all of the products mainly cause I dont use them, but if you do get the DPX etchs you need to get the P-sheets or tech sheets on those products. You really need them anyway, its free and full of info.

I prefer the K38 primer over the k36, personal opinion. It fills better and shrinks less too-HUGE factor.

Ive got to ask but what is the 1gal of DIT?

The clear is a good choice, I really like the 2042. But once again my personal opinion is the 2055 clear. To me it lays down better, buffs out great. But it can be a bad choice if not used in a booth with good air flow. 2055 is a very heavy clear which just hangs in the air longer. If you DONT REMOVE the overspray or dont have the air flow the solvents cant escape, they stay around the fresh clear. Well when that happens the solvents fall back onto the surface causing die back which is a loss of gloss condition. 2042 is not as heavy(not a good term to use) but it doenst hang in the air like 2055 likes to do.

Depending on the COLOR of your DBC I can say you are in the ballpark as price wise...Eric
