WOW!! What a game!! I have to admit, I thought it was over when USC went up 38 - 26. I figured the Longhorn's defense was starting to wear down and that USC would just run it down their thoats. But man, I didn't realize Vince Young was THAT good and THAT driven to win! He basically put the team on his shoulders and carried them! I figured Mack Brown would get outcoached by Carroll, but you can't gameplan for players like Young. Young just wasn't going to be denied.

With all that said, USC is one hell of a football team and it's shame someone had to lose. Hats off to Southern Cal for one of the best football games ever!

Congrats Horns!

I'm still do not believe the show Vince Young just put on! But USC is a one hell of a team and that fullback White would have been offensive MVP had they won. Great game! This one and the one last night between Penn State and Florida State has made this one of the best bowl seasons ever!

Can't take nothing away from them though. They're a great team. It's too bad someone has to lose a game like this.

I did not think a rushing quarterback could win a championship. Too much of a one dimensional threat. But I'm happy that Vince Young proved me wrong. Even with his half cocked side arm flicking of the ball.

As a bypartesan (sp?) SEC fan, I thought:

The ref's where border line retarded.
The defensive cordinator for USC should be shot. More blitzing, less zone!
The location was almost a home game for USC, but I'd hate to hear any more of those damn cow-bells than I have to.
The Bush Lateral had me in disbelief. I once did that in a high school game. We lost the ball, and I got to sit down for quite some time.
The Texas defensive line needs to eat more beef, and hit the weights earlier next year.

The announcers where about as dense as the ref's. Were do they find these guys? My girlfriend knows more about the game than they do. (well, not really)

The Texas kicker should not be allowed to partake in the victory. ;)

What about the magic knee down lateral in the 2nd quarter?Thats 6 points texas didn't earn.Granted they probably would have scored anyway but you never know.

Figured whoever had the ball last would win to start with, but after the first quarter changed my mind. Then figured Texas was not going to win after SC got so far ahead. What do I know, guess better stick to chevelles. Great Game!!!! Jb

Keith Jackson and Dan Fouts? Keith Jackson is the MAN, and I would say Dan Fouts knows the game as well as any former NFL quarterback who played the game for like TWENTY YEARS.

Now THAT was a good game. Those poor kickers. Both had so many chances to be the hero and kept missing. Made for a good game though.

My thoughts exactly! You never know! I've been a die hard SC fan my whole life, and boy oh boy did it hurt to see that unexpected lateral turnover that most likely would have been an SC touchdown. IMHO, that turnover and Young's knee being down for that "free" touchdown played major keys that most likely could have turned out to be an SC victory. Oh well, life goes on, and not trying to talk down or bad about the Longhorns, but they do deserve a HUGE congradulations!!!(sp?) They fought the good fight, overcame their cramps and injuries, and came out victorious in the end, that's one good team!

As they always say, there's always next year! :D :)

My 2 cents, there were two bad calls; the Vince Young knee on the ground lateral, and the Texas interception negated by the ground and called a fumble. They pretty much cancelled each other out.

Happy for the Big 12, Texas, and especially the ACC. That loss by USC allowed ACC to tie Big 12 for best bowl winning percentage- - -

Mike I know you are too young to remember the '70 and '71 Huskers but surely you can remember the '94, '95 and '97 Huskers? ;)

It was one of the most incredible games I've ever seen. Congrats to the Longhorns and USC played like demons too. The only downside as I see it, is that my Huskers have to play BOTH teams next year!

Isan't Carrol the defensive coordinator, if so, that would not be such good idea.

Jan 5th, 06, 11:22 PM
For most of the game, I saw Carrol talking to some otehr guy on the sidelines during the defensive play calling. I did see him light into number 10 a few times. Like a 5'10" 165lbs corner is going to take down Young. So, maybe we don't shoot the guy. But even the high light plays on sportscenter showed a "sleeper" linebacker that kept making pore choices. He'd wait too long before commiting to the rush.

Rich,
Give me a quarterback name, not just a team. I remember players only now. Free-aganecy screwed up "team" stats for the pros, so I just follow players now. ;) Was White their quarter back? Didn't he have a couple of knee-braces?

It was a very good bowl season all together. Even though my AU tigers got spanked. Just some good hard hitting football. I think the Oklahoma game was maybe my favorite upset. (I don't see Texas over USC as an upset, because I was figuring on it happening :) )

There were two great games on back-to-back nights. Penn State and Florida State (the Orange Bowl matchup) was every bit as good Texas and USC. It wasn't as high scoring, but it was every bit as hard hitting and dramatic.

Well being a Longhorn (1967 so I am getting old:clonk: ) and being there during the Darrell Royal years and a National Championship, last night was a bunch of fun when it was finally over. If for no other reason I wanted us to win after the TV sidelines cameras kept showing the USC players and how cocky they were. I wanted to see some humility in the end.

Both coaches are class acts and I am really happy for Mac Brown after taking a lot of heat for the past 5 years about how Texas could not win the big days.

I hope Vince Young does stay for another year and wins the Heisman then he has the recognition he deserves.

Even the Texas Aggies at the office today were subdued but complimentary of the Horns and that is rare!!

I'm going to go on record and say that Young will be better than either Vick or Culpepper, way better. In fact, he's already better than Vick. His stock went way up. If he goes pro today, he has moved up from a middle first round pick to a top three selection. The top three would be Bush, Lienart, and Young, and not necessarily in that order.

For '94 and '95 for the most part it was Tommie Frazier with Brook Berringer filling in for about half of the '95 season. Tommie was an outstanding college option quarterback with no hope of ever playing competitively at the pro level and besides the blood clot problem which sidelined him for half of the '95 season was never entirely eliminated. Brook was much more a pro-style QB but he unfortunately was killed in a flying accident shortly before the NFL draft of '96.

For '97 it was Scott Frost. He went on to the NFL to play as a defensive back.

None of these guys went on to make a name for themselves in the pros, but they were all outstanding in the college ranks. I still feel Tommie would have had a good shot at the Heisman in '95 if he'd been able to play the entire season. He was that kind of player who just simply made good things happen everytime he was on the field.

You need to cover the Tight End now and then and learn how to tackle if you want to be National Champs.

BB_Mike
Jan 6th, 06, 12:32 PM
I believe I was thinking of Major Applewhite.

I do recall watching Frazier play. Frost doesn't ring any bells.

I guess you can have a scrambling QB if you have the front line, and receivers that aren'ty afraid to block (not selfish). Usually, when I think of option teams, I invisoin Army and Navy. The QB just has to be tuff enough to take the shots. vince is big enough to do that. Leinart got smacked once and about needed some smelling sauce to get back into the game. :D

"BOOOO!!! Vince Young....another wanna be rushing QB. Look were Vick and Culpepper are today."

It's better to be a pocket passer like Carson Palmer or Griese. Oh wait...
Pretty sure Culpepper wasn't injured while running the ball either. It's the sour grapes by haters like yourself that make this National Championship sweeter.
