: 1964 327
Hi All, my understanding is that for 1964, the chevelle had available a 327 V8 at 250bhp and a 327 V8 300bhp - were they the same engine, with different carbs (i.e., 2bl v. 4bl, like in the 283) - was this engine the L78? if so, is it identical to the corvettes of that era (that seemed to be the biggest users of that engine) - what other GM's of that year used the same 327 that was in the chevelle?
As always, many thanks in advance for everyone's advice and guidance.

Rich-L79 Jan 4th, 06, 11:03 PM The 250hp engine had small heads and a 4-bbl carb. The 300hp engine had the large heads and a 4-bbl carb.
The L78 is the 375hp/396ci engine which didn't show up until 1966. (The 396 used in the Z16 was also a 375hp/396ci but used a hydraulic cam instead of the L78's solid cam and the Z16 version was designated the L37.)
The 250hp engine is the L30 and the 300hp engine is the L74.

Rich, many thanks - wasn't there also a ram air fuel injected version of the 327 in 1964? Was that a Corvette only engine - I seem to be confusing my numbers...maybe an L79?
At any rate, any good sources for 327 engines from that era? Were there cars in the GM lineup other than than the chevelle (and the corvette) that used the 327 in 1964? (by the way, is there a website or part of this site that details this kind of information??)
As always, many thanks in advance for everyone's advice and guidance.
cobra2411 Jan 5th, 06, 11:48 PM L79 is a 350hp 327. I think it was 65-66.

1965 L79 327/350hp = 6,021 Chevelles
1966 L79 327/350hp = cannot find prod #'s
1967 L79 327/325hp = 4,048 Chevelles
1968 L79 327/325hp = 4,082 Chevelles
No fuel injection offered for any year Chevelle, (64-72)to my knowledge.
I believe the 327 was available in the Nova, Impala and Camaro(67-68) for these years as well.

The 327 was put into a lot of Impalas also. My 250 h.p. 327 was originally installed in a 1964 Impala. They had the same block as the Vette, and mine also had a forged crank.
If you have trouble finding a 327 you could always use a 307 crank in a 1968+ 350 block.

pdq67 Jan 6th, 06, 8:24 AM They made the big FI unit equipped 327 motor for two years. 375hp/327 'Vette motor's in '64 and '65.
Great motors!!

PDQ - would that engine plug n' play with a chevelle? Do you know the code number or casting id or something for that particular engine?
As always, many thanks for everyone's advice and guidance.

OK - did a little more research...the engine in question was the L84 - it was available in 1963-1965 corvettes...
