I have a column shift automatic that has been converted to a floor shift. I want to eliminate the shift lever hookup on the column. Can I install a 4 speed steering column or is there another option?

It can be any floorshift column, not necessarily a four speed.

All 1969 Chevelle steering columns had a lever on the lower end of the steering column, (out under the brake booster.) Even on floorshifts, the lever was hooked up to a rod that was attached to the transmission. The rod pushed the lever to the full UP position when the four speed trans was shifted into reverse or the automatic trans (floorshift) was shifted into PARK.

If the lever was not in the full UP position, you could not rotate the ignition key all the way to OFF-LOCK and remove your ignition key. Many people had interference with headers and eliminated the rod and linkage to the transmission. They then wired the lever in the full UP position.

The only potential problem with wiring the lever is that you can have the car in motion, turn the key to OFF-LOCK, and your steering wheel will lock while the car is still moving.

This paper provides all the information you ever wanted to know about steering column/transmission shift interlock systems.

I would use a grinder and get rid of the column shift "nub" or what ever you want to call it.Once ground down, you'll have a small hole about the size of a penny you can fill with either fiberglass, bondo or epoxy.Sand, prime and paint.Done

If you can find a column from a second generation camaro, they will fit. I put a tilt column from a 70s era camaro into my 69 Chevelle. The electrical plug-in at the base of the column had to be switched over but otherwise a bolt-in swap.
