: Could I use spray cans?
phishfud Dec 13th, 01, 2:06 PM Ok, before anyone gets upset and calls me stupid, this would not be for my chevelle. I know that a real nice job cannot come from cans. This is for my soon to be daily driver import car(which is still rear wheel drive with 4 wheel ind. susp, and 4 wheel discs, factory). Anyway, my compresor wont allow me to use even a sears gun to paint, and i found a site that will mix up paint and put it in a can. So for this little car, would it turn out ok? I am stripping to bare(only cause the old paint was sooo bad), and using an etching primer first. The car needs to look nice, but not like i want for the velle. My other option was to use the craftsman detail gun, as my compressor can handle it. Anyone have any advice on this? Going to maaco is a no go, as the car is dismantled, and the engine compartment needs to be the same color as the car. I need to paint ity before i put the suspension back together, so it cannot be moved. any help would be great. thanks all.

I would use the detail gun to paint the engine compartment and the edges and door jams, reassemble the car and drive it to Maaco. Ask the manager, in advance, if they would spray your car using your paint. Most will, but you'll have to supply the entire system, primer, paint, hardener (if necessary) and reducer/thinner. This way, you'll be only paying for their labor AND you can use your brand/system of paint. That will turn out much better than spray cans.

normie Dec 14th, 01, 7:08 AM They have some really nice spray guns that use relatively LOW CFM from the compressor for example mine requires 7.9 CFM @50 PSI from my compressor.. and it sprays nicely! You may want too look into low volume guns.. Good Luck!

FO_FDYFO Dec 14th, 01, 8:58 AM I have not and would not do it because I have a good compressor and gun, but if it didn't and don't care if the car turns out perfect, I would do it. you can actually get a pretty good paint job with a can if you get your distance and over lap correct. practice on a few pieces first. what the hell its an import http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Jimmy P Dec 14th, 01, 12:03 PM Like they say, anything's possible. But, that would be like stripping all of the paint off of your car with a screwdriver.
You can RENT a compressor for a day. Even a decent paint gun.
phishfud Dec 14th, 01, 1:35 PM All good advice, however, my compressor only puts out 6.4@40 psi, not enough for any gun i found. I just dont want to put a lot of money into a paint job cause the body isnt perfect. The cans i found have what they call a unique spray pattern for a can, real nice and wide like a gun. It would cost me next to nothin to do it this way, and need any extra money to finish the chevelle. i guess the worst that could happen is it could turn out like crap, and then i guess id have to give up the cash for a maaco job. oh, well, i guess i have some thinking to do....
thanks again all,
terry
