Unfortunately Rick, if it's not already an SS, you can't make it one. You can try to "clone" it, but the experts will always know that it's not real.

The typical SS package for that year (not all of which are "standard")-(i) drive train-big block, with four speed or TH400 and 12 bolt posi rear, (ii) interior-buckets, console, in dash gauges, (iii) exterior-big wide hood/rear deck stripes, SS badges on the grill and front fenders, rubber mat on rear bumber with SS markings, five spoke steel wheels. I may be confusing the '70 model with the '72 on the rear bumper rubber mat and wheels.

This is just general stuff. If you want to be fully historically accurate, there are Chevelle books which list standard SS features and available options.

As BobMcC pointed out, you can make the car look and run like an original SS, but the VIN and cowl tag on your car will always show that the car was not an original SS. Maybe, you don't care about that. Some people do, some people don't.

Just drop a big block in your Malibu and call it a day.. you'll have a killer sleeper on your hands. I don't get what the big thing is about owning an SS is anyway, everyone has one; there's gotta be more out there than Malibu's now.

Hey man just look at my car. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif I purchase my car with a 402 and badges. I went ahead and finished the clone project. You can have an SS you can have either buckets/bench seats console/colum shift. In '72 you will need a round dash not the rectangle sweep dash that is standard in the Malibu. You will need to upgrade your suspension to the "F41". Boxed rear lower control arms and 7/8" sway bar, upper control arm to lower control arm braces, 1 1/8" or 1 1/4 front sway bar. (I have the 1 1/4). 12 bolt rear was standard for any model. The grill will have the center blacked out by removing the center chrome strips. They have 2 options for headlight/turn signal lights. You can have blacked out or chrome. There was not a standard it was time of build or what was available unlike the 70 model. Oh also the SS model came with 3/8" fuel line from the tank to the pump if you have anything less than a 350 4 barrel QJet it is probably just a 5/16th line. Also in '71 and '72 the SS models had 5 spoke 15X7 JJ wheels that were a cast/gun metal gray with blue bowtie centers. the steering wheel could eithe be a hard plastic wiht a padded center that had SS or the more popular 4 spoke soft wheel with round SS horn button. Had the Cowl hood with or without induction. Had standard hood pins and the stripes. I think I have covered about everything that you need to change if you have any questions or need pics of what it takes shoot me an email.
