nightmare_92 Jan 2nd, 06, 11:54 PM After a few hours of running through the site I have found alot of the answers I was looking for but still any info or advice on this project is appreciated
glennslanaker Jan 3rd, 06, 12:09 AM you've definitely found the right place for info. these guys know everything. i can tell you a few things about the car. it definitely came with a 396, could have been a 325, 350, or 375 horsepower version. you can't know unless you locate the build sheet, window sticker. your car was built in baltimore the second week of april, 1968. your car appears to be a matador red car, both top and bottom colors were red. the 765 code tells you what kind of seats it had, but i don't have access to that info. you're lucky to get a factory red car, that's kind of cool.
you shouldn't have any trouble getting a 396 engine to put back in it. you can find a '68 396 without much trouble at all. check the classified on this website. ebay usually has 3-4 396's at any particular time. they're plentiful.
Ark68SS Jan 3rd, 06, 12:05 PM [quote=glennslanaker] your car was built in baltimore the second week of april, 1968. the 765 code tells you what kind of seats it hadquote]
Actually it was built in February (02) in the 4th week (D)
the 765 tells you that the seats were Black Imitation Leather (vinyl) the B means Bucket seats. R is for Matador Red, the 2 denotes a Black vinyl top.

NiteOwlNY Jan 3rd, 06, 12:18 PM Mine WAS a red car, Red with a white vinyl top and it's now Silver. I've been thinking some day respraying it back the origional color and putting a new top on it but for now I like the silver.
Good luck with the 68... 68-69 are my favorite years, I have some things I like better on both years though...
nightmare_92 Jan 3rd, 06, 4:21 PM Thanks for the info! It has a bench seat now but if it was factory bucket then i am gonna switch it :) this place is a gold mine of answers lol I hope to meet some of you one day at a chevelle gathering but this will prolly take me a year to get together. hope i dont bug you to much with stupid questions but i want it nice and would prefer to do it right the first time rather than find out later i messed up. I am going to start with getting it converted to disc brakes and upgrading suspension lookin for all reccomendations on upgrade companies. The man that does my drag cars chassis said they have used some ssbc brake conversions so i will probably go with them on that. all suggestions welcome as I want to drop the front end so car has a aggressive stance (rake) while keeping the rear approx factory height thinkin boyd cottington wheels
NiteOwlNY Jan 3rd, 06, 5:32 PM Don't worry about the questions, although there are many years of useful info here and the search button is a great thing....
I haven't found wheels that I like yet, so for now I'm keeping the Rally's.
AZCamino Jan 3rd, 06, 9:13 PM 765 is a Black bench seat interior code. The letter after it is usually redundant. There should be an A (bench) after the 765, not a B; are you sure there is a B? The Black bucket interior code is 766. You must have mistyped either the code or the letter. Should be 765 A or 766 B.

nightmare_92 Jan 3rd, 06, 9:24 PM yes its a "b" tag has tr 765 B R2 paint So what does a b mean nothing i looked on some more of the site and I seen the part where it had the codes for some and seen the 765 listed for bench but i thought they may be diffierent as i found myself looking at some things from a canadian plant.
AZCamino Jan 3rd, 06, 9:39 PM Sorry, I'm showing my ignorance about 68s. Should have done my research first.:)
I found some other Baltimore trim tags with 765- B. It seems the 68 tags don't follow the pattern established by the earlier Chevelles.
Here is the link at Chevellestuff.com:
http://www.chevellestuff.com/68velle/68_trim_tags-bal.htm
I think you should go by the 765 (black bench) and ignore the B.

nightmare_92 Jan 3rd, 06, 9:43 PM I went back to the garage and checked yes my info is right according to the tag where should i be able to find the build sheet I dont think the interior has been changed at least the back seats the car was in a storage building for almost 20 years b4 I bought it. ( friends car that passed away was his from glory days) I talked with a friend that grew up with him and he said ne remembered he changed buckets out of one but he cant remember if it was this one. I am going to redo the interior so if its in the seat can i just cut the vinly and search for it or take it out is it in the back or the bottom?
nightmare_92 Jan 3rd, 06, 9:46 PM so its still a bench seat car according to that and you sould still be correct on that standpoint thanks for your help

:o Sorry, when I looked at Dale's site I didn't scroll over to the side & see the bucket seat codes. :clonk: Yes, it's a bench seat. My car is a 765-A (bench), & I goofed up thinking A was bench & B was bucket. Do any of you know the difference in the A & B codes? Pretty sure that the rest of my statement in the other post is correct. :)

nightmare_92 Jan 3rd, 06, 10:06 PM everything i have seen says no one knows what the b means what about build sheets any idea where i should look i can cut the interior its going in new anyway

Just look under the seats, no need to take them apart, the build sheets have been found stuffed in the springs from the underside. No guarantee you will find one there, they could be anywhere; under the carpet, behind kick panels, door panels, on top of gas tanks. 68 owners probably know the most likely places to find them for each assembly plant. Do a search of this website for posts about the subject.

NiteOwlNY Jan 4th, 06, 11:36 AM I don't expect to ever find mine, I'm going to believe that someone found it in it's 38 years of existence and never put it back. I have too many parts on my car that don't belong there as it is.
