When I last inquired about the engine I am beggening to build, I had limited my self to a budget of 3000. Now due to inheritace that is coming I am upping my budget, maybe doubling it. I want a street/occasional strip engine with around 500 torque and HP and build it strong enough to maybe add a blower in the future. This is my first enginge build, and I am taking my time.
Here is what I have in mind so far:

Eagle Forged (383) Crank shaft-rated to 1000hp.
6" forged rods
Keith Black flat top pistons (.030 over)
AFR street aluminum heads (195cc) with 74 cc combustion chambers
I'm still thinking about the valve set up. I think I want flat tappet lifters and maybe a middle of the road cam and 1.6 rocker arms (magnum?)
A dual quad intake set up.

This will all be on a 350 block, four bolt main. that I am considering using some block filler on up to the freeze plugs.

Like I said this is my first engine build so I am open to any suggestions or criticism.

crank and rods go to www.cnc-motorsports.com or www.racingjunk.com why the hard block?r u gonna ever spray?take this into consideration usually the torque multiplier of nitrous is 1.5 to 1(100 shot=100hp and 150albs torque)if nitrous is gonna be used go with forged pistons.what is the vehicle and weight and times u wanna run in quarter.awesome choice on heads!!!gotta tell us your goals.think 420hp and 450 lbs torque---->150 shot nitrous=570hp and 675 obs torque!!!of course all these numbers have fudge factors but just ideas:)

...and build it strong enough to maybe add a blower in the future.... Keith Black flat top pistons (.030 over)

Forget the hypers...you'll need a good forged piston.

wiseco makes good forged piston kits at a great price that includes all the extras.

I am actually planning on a 69 chevelle. This will all be put together in the summer/fall time, My wife allowed me to build the enginge first so I already bought the 350 (4-bolt main). Since our garage is small and we will also be moving around the spring/summer time. I figure I will be doing alot of upgrades to the car when I get it over time.

I've read (and I could be wrong- so correct me if I am) that the block filler wont affect the heating of the engine if its up to the freeze plugs since 75% of engine heat is contained in the the uppper 1/3 of the engine. Thats why I am considering it.

I am considering the nitrous, we'll see. For naturally aspirated I was think a 1/4 mile somewhere in the twelves. Than adding niotrous or blower- alittle higher.

I do want this to be streetable, but not every day. Any recomendations on the valve train? I'm still thinking.

Ok if you are going to use blower or NOS you had best have a Forged piston... but you need to think about your compression ratio when choosing it. I have used the AFR 195's before... the 68cc version to get 10.5:1 compression... too much for a blower. With the 74cc's you will be in the 9 to 9.5:1 area with most pistons and head gaskets... 9 is ok... but I wouldn't be higher than that with a blower. Also I have seen WAY more failures with NOS motors than blowers... mostly because of inexperienced people using them. So if you are thinking of a power adder I'd use a supercharger. They are more friendly to street drive also. But you need to think about your overall goals... street? lots of strip? I can tell ya from experience that "a little strip" can turn into a LOT of strip use. If you are going to use a solid lifter or solid roller cam (I love solid rollers) I'd use a shaft rocker system. Check out Yella Terra Platinum Race Rockers.... I LOVE them... easy to install and easy to adjust... all you need is an .026 and .028 feeler gauge. and be SURE to use correct valve springs. I get mine from a local machine shop whp buys direct from Dale Earnheart Inc. If you want their number let me know. They can also setup your AFR's for you. They have mine in there now for a clean-up and re-spring from AFR's to DEI's springs. Good Luck,

Steve
