: QUESTIONS ON DIESEL OIL LIKE SHELL 15w-40 ROTELLA
SWHEATON Dec 29th, 05, 9:30 PM Hi,i know Shell makes the Rotella 15w-40 oil for diesels that has the extra friction fighting additives in it that are great for added safety when running flat tappet cams.
My questions are:
1) There are 3-4 other brands of 15w-40 diesel oils (which i will list below) and i would like to know if they also have the same friction fighting additives for diesels as the Shell 15w-40 Rotella has?
* CHEVRON DELO 400 15W-40 FOR DIESELS
* VALVOLINE PREMIUM BLUE DIESEL 15W-40 (REC BY CUMMINS)
* MOBIL DELVOC 1300 SUPER 15W-40 FOR DIESELS
* CASTROL 15W-40 FOR DIESELS
2) Are these diesel oils with the additional anti fricton additives only offered in 15w-40 grade or are they offered in 10w-30/10w-40/10w-50/15w-50/20w50?
3) If they are offered in other grades what companies ofer which grades?
Thanks....Scott

Keith Tedford Dec 30th, 05, 5:15 PM Do a search. This has been discussed either here or on the www.yenko.net web site. It was here. Search for "Shell Rotella".

They talk oil like chevelles are here!
saturnstyl Dec 30th, 05, 5:38 PM I don't know, but I can tell you this much. All the 97 and older Mercedes at my dealership get Rotella. I have cracked open many an engine with 100K miles on it to find it looks brand new inside, with 7500 mile services. I run it in the Ramjet 502, because synthetic would be a waste as it will use some oil, and it gets changed frequently anyways. Its good stuff!
DougA Dec 30th, 05, 5:54 PM I have never seen Rotella in anything but 15w40.I buy it 2 barrells at a time and have been using it since 1978 when it first came out.I use it in every engine on our farm.I bought a new International road tractor in 77 with a 350 Cummins in it ,when I sold that engine in 1998 it had 1,900,000 miles on it and no measurable wear on the original crank.Half a dozen in frame overhauls,and 10,000 mile oil changes.I now have a 1995 International,N-14 Cummins with 510,000 miles and uses 1 quart (holds 11 gallons) between 10,000 mile changes,have never had the valve covers off except to adjust the valves.It is the best oil I have ever seen and friends that use it have similar stories like mine.Its also the only oil I would consider in my Chevelle.

pdq67 Dec 30th, 05, 7:17 PM Please consider this!!
Use whatever oil trips your trigger and then add half a small bottle of good old EOS to it to top it off..

sinned Dec 30th, 05, 8:10 PM Delo is by far one of the better oils out there. Factory filled and recommended in every Caterpillar and most Cummins.
427L88 Jan 1st, 06, 7:39 AM Pennzoil Fleet is the same type of mix, but its scarcer now in the jugs. So I'm switching to either Delo or Rotella. With a solid flattappet cam, I won't run much else anymore. Oils have changed in the last ten years. And like pdq says, I usually give it a couple of shots (ozs) of EOS as well.
pdq67 Jan 1st, 06, 12:13 PM The days of "gear lube smelling", "dark teal colored" motor oil is fast coming to an end!
AND one other thing is that a half a half pint of pure soy diesel will make your motor up to 3 percent more eff.!!
AND this has been proven b/c of the great lubricity that the esters that make up the stuff have.

BillK Jan 1st, 06, 12:43 PM Another alternative is Valvoline's "off road use only" performance oils. They have the correct additives, mainly Zinc and Potasium if I recall correctly, to protect flat tappet cams. The Valvoline oils are designed for gasoline engines and probably have different additives than dsl oils. Dont forget, a dsl never gets gas in the oil from rich running. etc.
By the way, GM does not recommend running EOS on a regular basis due to the possibility of combustion chamber deposits etc.
All of the major oil companies web sites have links to the MSDS sheets and other spec sheets for all of thier products. YOu can look at them and compare the ingrediences yourself.
hilljack Jan 1st, 06, 2:04 PM What about Wallmart 15/40 fleet:D is the Rotella really different then the other fleet oils?
