went to look at a motor today.the guy selling it said it was a LS6 454/450hp. crate motor that had about 5,000 miles on it.it was a big block with numbers on the back of the block.no numbers on the normal place on the front, the receipt he showed me had a 1984 purchase date on it.stating the engine size but no part number.he was asking 4,000.00 dollars for it.i did not buy it not feeling real sure if this was the real deal.what do you guys think? gary

Gary, can you get the casting #'s from the back of the block, under theb valve covers on the heads, intake, harm ballencer, carb & dist, etc?

The casting id's can help verify engine and if the intake/carb/etc were all installed on motor from factory.

After you check the numbers, I would pull the pan and check the bearings.Could have been a tough 5,000 miles.

Sometimes things are to good to be true. Probably saved yourself a lot of grief.

if he bought it new from the dealer it isn't going to have the front pass side stamped.
I purchased same engine in 1984,11-1 pistons,steel crank,7/16" rods

Check for an XXA suffix on the tab above the timing chain cover.
