Hi

This is my first time to this site. It looks great, lots of good information.

I am the proud owner of a 1969 SS Convertible. I bought it from the original owner in January, 1984.

The car is unrestored but still runs excellent, looks great. My son and I are slowly getting things ready to restore the car. He asked me yesterday how many of these cars were made. I have been unable to find any numbers on the SS Convertible production. Can anyone help?

Thanks

David

others will be all over this later, but if you need to know now. Roughly 8k convertibles were built in 1969 ( I believe it to be the lowest production year as well) Of those approximately 2k are thought to have left there respective assembly plants as SS's. Of course with the recent price craze all but a handful are probably SS396's now. lol. Good luck with the car and welcome to the greatest chevelle site on the web. Jason.

Hi David,

Welcome to Team Chevelle. You're correct, you can find a lot of good information, as well as help, on this site. Please tell us more about your car!!

If you bought your car from the original owner and it still runs and looks good, you might want to give some thought to not fully restoring it, just fix things that might need to be fixed. A car can be restored many times, but it is only original once. Just some food for thought :)

What part of Arizona are you in?

Thanks for the information guys. I hope you all don't mind a WHOLE lot of questions. I have left the car pretty much as it was when I bought it for a couple of reasons. First, I never have had the money and the time at the same time to do the car correctly. Second, in the past I have never been satisfied with the restoration information I have found on the car. That is until I found this site. I know there are some parts on the car that is not correct. The original owner replaced the original wheels. I am also not sure what the original air cleaner looks like. It had a Cal-Custom on it when I brought it home.

Here is the scoop on my car. The guy I bought it from ordered for his wife in 1969. The car is a 350HP 396, power top, under dash 8 track with am radio, TH400, 12 bolt posi (I'm not sure of g/r but it's low! Almost 3400rpm at 70 mph) tach and gauge's, tilt wheel, a/c. He told me that he didn’t get the car until the 1970 models were out because of a strike at GM. Maybe this is the reason for low production numbers?? He took very good care of the car but his wife got it in a divorce settlement in the mid 70's. He got the car back from her in 1979 still in good shape but a bit neglected. It sat in his garage until I bought it in Jan, 84. I had to replace the pinon bearing in the rear end. The engine had a collapsed lifter. I pulled the heads and had valve job done, replaced the cam and lifters. The inside of the engine looked great for having 92,000 miles on it. It had only a very small ridge on the cylinder lip! We drive it on special occasions for just to relax. The odometer shows 24,937 as of today. The car still runs strong and doesn’t smoke at all.

Bill:

Point well taken. I never thought of it that way. There are so many parts that are aging, drying up it would be nice to do it all at once. It is kind of cool to tell people that the car is pretty much as it was when it left the factory. I live about 40 miles south of Phoenix in a town called “Casa Grande”

Its really nice to see others as excited about Chevelle's as I am.

Well , enough of my rambling for today……

Dave, when it comes to discussing these darn old cars, there can never be enough rambling :D :D So don't be bashful about asking questions.

What a great story, and sounds like a really neat car. Your car would have originally had the chrome lid, open element air cleaner - very easy to find reproductions of them. Also not too difficult to find the original type SS wheels that would have been original equipment on the car, if you're so inclined.

I have been to Casa Grande many times. Years ago, the routine was like this....drop the wife off at the Outlet Mall so she could shop, and I would head to the junkyards so I could shop ;) Don't do that too much any more.
