The problem is not just the alternator, but the power steering BOX itself...

To fit the Chevelle, the brackets were unique to move the pump up away from the box... This pushed it up too close to the alternator, so the remote reservoir system was used...

Full-size Chevy brackets will not work, but maybe Corvette or early BB truck...

I have never seen (at least noticed) a "stock" GM bracket set that would work. I haven't seen any aftermarket either, unless they were complete systems (more expensive that the repro remote setups)... Of course, I haven't been looking much lately...

I do see alot of people use the 1969 and up long water pump setups, but those move the alternator to the passenger side. I think the overall cost will be about the same considering all new brackets/pulleys and water pump will be needed... IMO, they don't look right either, even if the car is not stock...

I get 36-516094 as an AC Delco current replacement part number.

That number I got from the Delco website, but I also got 36-517253 from an old Delco catalog. I don't see where they both cross...

They both say EXC High Performance. I don't know what that could mean. I thought all 396's had the same pumps... Sorry to have confused you even more...

im just refusing to spend all that cash on a new pump, brackets, and all that it will cost me several hundred dollars to get my power steering running again which leads me to another thought i have found a NOS manual steering box for a 67 chevelle and it is cheap so im considering going manual until i can afford the power setup my qurstion is what all do i need im guessing the manual box and a pitman arm or is there anything else that i will need, thanks tema chevelle i couldnt have made it this far without yall THANKS

For Power steering, you can use your "pump", but the outer tin housing (around the pump) must be changed. Unfortunately, I don't know anybody that is selling that piece alone though...

The brackets aren't the the same, but the pump housing and core-mounted reservoir are very "similar" on an 80's/90's 1-ton Chevy/GMC pickup (maybe 3/4-ton too?). Similar enough that most people probably wouldn't notice the difference... Too bad, I threw out two sets of these a few months ago... While not identical, they are pretty close and should work. Maybe find that setup in the wrecking yard, and then just buy the "Chevelle" brackets and pressure hose from a resto house...

Our site sponsor, Ground Up has the whole set for $435...
