I have a 283 in a 64 chevelle, with an auto powerglide and i would like to increase hp by 200- 300 and would like to know what kind of things i would need to maintain reliablilty. And i would like to keep it a daily driver with somewhat ok mileage i dont have tooo far to drive. I would like to know what would be a good build one for money and one for the power, thank you.

The 283 isn't going to be a low-end grunt motor. It really needs to breathe well and rev. You need to get a low (numerical higher) rear such as 4.10's or 4.56's and maybe even higher.
Any motor with 400 hp and without fuel injection is not going to get great mileage. The real decision you need to make is power or economy. It is difficult to get the best of both worlds out of a little 283.
Look up some past posts by pdq67. He loves the little 283 and knows hot to hot rod them. PM him or look up some of his past posts in performance on the 283.

You're talking about doubling or trippling the stock power level. I don't see that happening without some radical mods and without a serious reduction of driveability, fuel economy, and reliability. There are ways to increase your power while keeping the original engine. Bore it .060 over, use a 327 crank, moderate cam (XE 262, etc.), aftermarket intake, 600 cfm carb, headers, etc.. That combo should get you to about 300 hp and be compatible with your stock tranny and gears.
If you really gotta have more power, you should look into a bigger engine. Keep in mind though that most high hp 350's and 383's will need a looser converter and lower gears to make use of their power. While a 500hp 383 (or a 450hp 355) might sound like a good idea, without low gears and a loose converter, a 400hp 383 could be quicker, cost less, and be much easier to live with.
