Don't know if this is the right forum but here goes. Can anyone tell me the purpose of the 'Smugglers box' in the bed of my '67 elky? Also, where is the spare tire supposed to be stored in this vehicle?

Its not called a smugglers box for nothing-just kiddin, It was a production shortcut to use the station wagon chassis for the Elcamino rather than changing the floor pan configuration. Don't know about the 67 Elky but from 72 till 78 the spare mouted upright behind the passenger seat,78 and later lay down in the area behind the passenger seat under the bed where the smuglers box of older models was.

The '68 mounts behind the passenger seat in upright position as well. I guess it's true for '69-72 as well. I'm not familiar with the '67 and earlier models.

There's a threaded hook (not sure of the official name) that hooks into a piece of metal, just like the one that holds the spare in the trunk of a car. It holds the tire against the wall behind the passenger seat. I'm sure that if you see a slot back there where a hook could go, that's what it's intended for.

Every one I have seen has been rusted out, at least in my state.

good question but no spare behind seat in my 67 but great for speakers and box makes great cooler with drains and the bed mat sure hides it from the gendarmes also 68 on has longer cab probly for this reason you could always use spacesaver if it bothers you
