: Do Ground Up bumper pads need trimming?

Sounds like the 1970 Chevelle SS bumper pad I need comes from Ground Up. (The lousy one I already bought is manufactured by Proud Road.) Some of you out there say the Ground Up pad, although it's contoured properly, is trimmed poorly. (On the outside edge, I presume.) Before I buy it, I want to know: Just HOW bad is the trim on Ground Up's pad? Is it a problem I can easily fix with a razor blade?

Also, can anyone tell me who manufactures Ground Up's pad?

Thanks -- Jon in Seattle

Jon, what was wrong with the one you got from Proud Road? I bought mine from Year One and it was manufactured by Proud road. It looks exactly like the original that came off my car and fits excellent.

The Proud Road pad looks good and is trimmed nicely -- until you attempt to apply it to the bumper. Because Proud Road's pad is uniform in thickness throughout, rather than contoured to the shape of the somewhat-curvy bumper, the pad's outer surface doesn't look flat once it's applied. It curves, just like the shape of the bumper beneath it. The original factory pad was contoured on the back and flat on the front. And that's what I'm looking for.

Can anyone else answer my original questions? Thanks! -- Jon

The original pad on my bumper is curved on the front while installed. The pad I also got form Year One, made by proud road looks and fits excellent.

The bumper pad is a uniform thickess throughout. It is not convex on the back side to contour to the curve of the bumper. It does seem that it would have to be pre-bent along the top edge to the bumper curve prior to installation. I can't imagine the adhesive being strong enough to hold it in place during setup unless it's some serious quick drying epoxy. I've never seen one of the repro pads so I don't know how they come. If it's perfectly flat now maybe a heat gun could be used to relax it a little to conform? Just don't get it too hot!

I dod a trial fitting on mine last night while I wait for my glue to arrive in the mail. It is soft enough to conform to the shape of the bumper easily. But it will have to be clamped while the glue is drying. Also looks to me like a chunk of wood would be useful also to help it while the glue dries. I owuld say that the one you got from Proud Road will fit just fine. I would also be willing to bet that they are all made by the same company no matter where you buy it.

NO their not made by the same company.
ive owned four 70 SS's and the pad that proud road makes looks nothing like any of my originals.

the one Ground Up sells is more correct.
as for the way its trimed, it looks like it was touched up with a razor blade after it came out of the mold.
buy one if your not happy, Ken will take it back, and he wont charge you a 20% restock fee like OPG.
