I think I has some miss information that might lead me to putting to much oil in a BB. Bought the car two years ago. I think all componets except the block are from a 66 / 396 engine. The block is a CE stamped block from 1970 with a casting # that indicates it is a 402.

The dip stick and tube was a GM replacement with part # stamped in dip stick. There was a hole drill above the full mark in the dip stick. When I replace the spin on oil filter with the filter thats called for in a 1970 402 block and add 5 qts of oil the oil level is at the drilled hole.

I replaced the dip stick and tube with a original dip stick & tube for a 66 BB. The level of the oil reads above the full mark,at the same level as the previous situation.

My 66 manual says put in 4 qts or 5 qts when replacing filter.I am wondering that since the 402 filer is not the same size as the original 66 canister filter that maybe I should not be adding 5 qts. What do you think?

What type of damage can be done with two much oil?

Jim; Too much oil can cause foaming if the crank picks it up and "whips" it, but you're completely safe at 5 quarts. Did you fill the filter, or at least start the engine before checking the level? Either way, nothing to be concerned with. Steve

Yep, ran the car then checked. Have since taken out 1/2 qt. and it reads exactly at the full mark. Must the the difference in size between the canister filter that came on the 66 BB and the spin on filter I am now using. Thanks,

Use the dipstick intended for the engine you have installed. I always use the medium length filter for my engines. a wix 1061.
