I was planning on using DP40 on my '70 El Camino, have used it before and like it. A guy who comes and paints front bumpers of used cars at our dealership (we have no body shop), told me that K36 would be a better product and more forgiving to work with. Can anyone verify this? Are these two products even meant for the same purpose? Kinda souns like K36 would go over DP40 instead of replacing it. I'll be at this phase of my resto in a month or so and would like to know. All replies appreciated.

Hi Dave,
Yes, you're right on. The DP's are an epoxy primer intended to cover bare metal while K36 is a high build, sandable primer. Shoot a few coats of K36 over a good base of DP and block to your hearts content. Go through the K? Lay down some more and block away. Hope this helps.

Now to really confuse you. If you are going over bare metal and also want to sand you can use NCP-271, which is a corrosion resistant high build primer. Its really thick. I usually use this on chassis and our first coat on bodywork.

K36 shouldn't be sprayed over bare metal. When I started the bodywork on my 72 Elky, I used DP, followed by K36. That works great if you don't sand some areas back to bare metal during bodywork.
I would spray the bare metal with DP, and then use NCP-271 from them on. It can be sprayed over bare metal, but DP is still better choice. While finishing up the bodywork on my Elky, I used NCP-271 and really liked it. It block sands very nicely.
Good Luck,
