I was told that the basecoat clearcoat which is what I am haveing applied to my car next week will take 6 months or more to (out gas) or dry, before I can safetly use a car cover over it. Does it realy take that long for the paint to set up. This shop does not have heat lamps.

"Heat lamps" do not cure paint, they force dry and are a poor way to get the job done at best.

It does not take that long for the paint to cure as long as you have extended times at over 60 degrees. There are times when a painter/shop will pile on product and trap solvents to create that very problem though.

My guess is that they have had a customer in the past lay a car cover on and caused a problem for them and they are now being extra cautious. I don't blame them, I used to say the same thing.

Do as they say and they will stand behind their job.

I would be more careful of putting any type of wax on your car for several months, depending on the product. Most car covers are designed to breath and let air out. I would only use a cover if you are in an area with other things, such as contaminents that can fall on the car, like sap. Besides, 6 months in the sun will not hurt the paint, but it may terrorize your interior. How about keeping it in your garage.....
