: Soundproofing doors

My 70 Convertible doors were originally undercoated on the inside. I am going to POR15 paint the insides and want to soundproof the doors (why in a convertible you say?, because I'm a perfectionist and a PITA). http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

I was thinking about using the sound deadner I used under my dash and along the kick panels. It is a synthetic cloth/rag material with a fiberglass mesh and a foil face purchased from JC Whitney. I adhere the foil face to the metal with 3M Super Adhesive Spray.

My question: Will this material be subjected to absorbing moisture? It shouldn't rot the metal but will it get skanky smelling when I get hit in a sudden rain shower? It will be a predominately sunny weather 3000 mile a year car.

Has anyone done this? Should I just stay with the rubberized undercoating?

Thanks,

--Andy--

If money isn't an issue, go with the Dynomax Adhesive Backed material. Most people soundproof their doors by applying the deadner to the back of their door panels. Becuse then you would have the factory moisture barrier to ensure that it won't soak any water up. But if you're going to use the Autosheild deadner with the spray adhesive on the inside of the door skin and are worried about moisture, then take some duct tape and cover the edges of the exposed rag material to avoid any water absorbtion.

I've seen some aerosol sound deadeners that might just work for you - that way you don't have to worry about moisture getting behind the sound deadening mat.

I would just use a spray on undercoating or something similar, because you just know rain will get in between the glass and fuzzies. Thats why there are drains in the bottom of the door, right? The water shield would to protect the door panel from the moisture. I would definately expect anything that absorbs moisture and sits there to rot the door, because I dont think much air gets through there to dry it out. No rain you say? Gotta wash the car sometime! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Thanks Guys!

I think I'll stick with the spray on undercoating.

Kevin, What is the name/manufacturer of sound deadner sprays? Where could I find some?

Thanks,

Just an FYI, I have seen more than a few 30's GM cars with rust holes in the middle of the door skin because the insulation they used to glue to the inside of the doors held some moister.
