: Might mean the end of my Chevelle

Hey I want to thank everyone on this forum for the help you've given me over the last year or more.

The wife has agreed to us buying one of the '05 GTO's. I'm guessing that come Spring, I'll probably part ways with my Chevelle.

My lack of engine/transmission know-how has been the main reason I haven't enjoyed owning an older car.

They're beautiful machines though, and I believe every time I took it out I got stares, compliments and sometimes offers to buy. Hopefully if I do decide to get rid of it, those offers will still be around.

Thanks again. I'll still be lurking around some and all you folks have a Merry CHRISTmas and a happy new year.

Best advice for selling - Don't sell it when you HAVE to sell it. Meaning, give yourself some time in order to get the most dollar value out of it.

Good luck with the GTO. I've seen a few turbo kits available for them... should you feel the need for speed. :)

Anything I had before she met me doesn't count. She just got a $20,000 car, so the next one is mine. I'm thinking GTO or maybe the new Camaro wen it comes out :D

there is nothing wrong with having a new car, and i hope you don't get sellers remorse.

i was on the way to work today, and saw a new solstice. really neat looking car, i like the way the roof has a little rake to it, gives it some attitude, then a 68 bullit type mustang went by, and i was gone.

new cars are great, but i just dig the old stuff. both my projects are down right now with little stuff that frustrates me, but if somebody gave me a new gto for my elky and cutlass, i'd sell it and get a b.b. chevelle or a 62 pontiac ventura. that's just me, i like the old stuff. i like our new mustang, but if i wasn't married, it wouldn't be in the drive way. good luck with your new car, i'm sure you'll enjoy it....

So if the Chevelle is yours and the new GTO is hers I don't see a problem with both. Maybe I'm lucky, my wife has her Liberty and I have both the El Camino and the Explorer but can only drive one at a time. To me it's worth the extra insurance money to have something I can use in the ice/snow and if the EC breaks or needs some upgrade. After the warranty is up you'll have to spend money to repair the new one too, and you'll find that it costs a lot more than the Chevelle for parts and labor with all the high tech stuff. Also,
you could take a class or two at night at a local trade school, or ask for help from a member living near you. I guess I just hate to have someone that enjoys their classic to get rid of it.

you either love them, or you're better off leaving them alone. Just think in 10 years your GTO will be worth a couple grand, if that, and the velle, 30.

I doubt that. What 10 year old high performance car is worth $2000 today? Not even dime a dozen Mustang GTs go for that. I have a hard time believing they will ever go for less than $10K, and I think they would eventually start to go back up, particularly if they only make them for a few years.

I've had to sell things before and most often had second thoughts down the road. I would really think about it before committing to a sale.

With my wife I use the excuse that it's like "money in the bank" and another is "I can't breathe with out one". I hope she doesn't call me on the last.

New cars are nice but anybody can have one!

Leaks, Leaks, Leaks; can't find 'em and can't stop 'em. Thought they were coming from valve covers, bought a new set of cast Z28 covers, new gaskets, but they're still there. Carburetor guy said the one dripping on the starter he thought was rear main seal; front leak may be from timing chain cover.

Just did get the carburetor fixed where it runs pretty well even when cold. Had one heck of a time finding someone around here that even works on carbs anymore.

The car's a looker; if I can justify keeping the 10K I've invested in it tied up; it may just stay where it is. At least it's out of the weather.

Well, uh, they would both be mine. She first said get the GTO, but get rid of the Chevelle. Now she says it's OK to have both. I'm the one with the love/hate relationship with the Chevelle.

She's scared to death of the Chevelle. Of course, she's never driven it since I finally got the carb fixed right. The Chevelle's put up for the winter. I'll think hard about it the next few months, but I feel guilty with 2 expensive toys.

but I feel guilty with 2 expensive toys.

I have 2 cars for toys. The 72 is my baby. The 71 is a daily driver but will be a toy next week once I get my truck back out of the shop. We bought the wife her Tahoe 2 weeks ago. I seriously thought about selling the 71 so I could pay off some more on the truck, too many cars, etc. When I discussed with my wife she told me "No, you are not selling it, you need to keep it and fix it up. And it is paid off anyways." My wife is great about that and understanding how I feel about my cars. She has nicknamed the 72 "Mistress" since I spend so much time with it. Of course, she did tell me NO MORE for awhile. It sounds like your wife is the same, which is a great thing. I guess I am trying to say, just really think it over for the next few months like you said. I have sold a few other cars that I truly regret. They weren't Chevelles and were not worth much but they were mine..... Also, if you have the GTO for the reliable hot rod you can afford to take as long as you want tinkering on the 'velle.

Someone has to explain this GTO thing to me. I don' understand. I don't give a damn if the new Mustang is a Furd, 450 ponies under the hood, those looks, in a convertible maybe, hoboy!

Now, if you wanna talk the new Camaro {I don't think there will be a new Chevelle}, now you have my undivided attention .

Just a few comments from an '05 GTO owner

I don't fit in a new Mustang comfortably, 6'9" and the kids can fit in the back seat with me in it. Mustang? No way.

Quality level all around in fit and finish/materials is top notch for the $$. Even after 10,000 miles there are no rattles, squeeks or groans even over very rough roads.

LS2/tremec 6 speed/ IRS=effortless speed with manners plus decent fuel economy to boot.

Very comfy and quiet inside, very confident road manners even way up there over the speed limit.

Bread and butter looks=can get away with lots of 'stuff' on the roads and blend in. The styling, this alone is the most contraversial subject with the car, but after driving one for the last 10 months it does get lots of attention and the good kind if that matters to the buyer. Anyway, the looks grow on you after looking at it for as long as I have.

Does this mean I don't like the new Mustang? No, I really like it, the styling is right on. Plus the new Cobra coming out with a supercharged 5.4 in it? Sweet stuff, it really is a good time to be a car guy again.

Hey I appreciate the good words about the GTO.

I like the Mustang too, but the 5 speed shifter felt more like a truck (very notchy) and the interior, while very nicely done in a retro way looked like they used cheap plastic. Another little thing was reaching the shoulder belt. I had the seat all the way back, and it felt like I was reaching into the trunk for it.

Biggest issue with GTO is when to buy. I keep thinking GM will come up with some more incentives either through GM card or elsewhere. Last year I had over $10K in rebate money; but opted to potentially wait for the '05.

I'm waiting to hear now from a dealer in NY. The sales manager told me it's snowing every day on their cars, and he wants to get rid of his GTO's. We'll see how bad- - - may be driving up to meet them halfway around Harrisburg tomorrow.

Good idea. The 23rd is probably a slow day for dealers, especially when it is snowing. Please keep us informed and of course you must post pictures if you just happen to get your Christmas present tomorrow.

Exactly! Take a look at 96 Impala SS's... They are STILL brining in around $20k for the ones that have lower miles and are not trashed... Not too shabby for a car that was $26k on the sticker.

Not too bad for a modern classic car. The GTO's will be the same way, becuase they are such low production.

You will see beat up ones for cheap- but nice low mile ones will hold their value pretty good.

I like the car, and thanks for your kind words.

If you ever get a chance to drive one, take the time to do so. I did not think much of it until that happened, it just kind of sucked you in and did the deed after the first drive. At the time I needed a car and had the chance to purchase a 2 door sporty ride for the first time for a daily driver (other than the Chevelle) so I just did it and don't reret it. I just wish it was cheaper, but you do get what you pay for they say :)

NOZ34, good luck to you on your search. I know buying a car is a pain anyway in the first place (I don't like the car buying experience) but you should be able to bargain one down to around $28000 or so.

Go to www.ls1gto.com (http://www.ls1gto.com) and poke around there for more info on these cars.

NOZ, Where in VA are you at? Maybe we can figure this thing out sometime if you're close enough.

Well, I'm in Waynesboro. That's south of Harrisonburg, East of Staunton, well North of Roanoke.

I didn't see anyone near me when someone did the website with the flags. You can see me on that.

Where are you? I appreciate the offer to help.

Still haven't bought the GTO. I thought I had made a reasonable offer, but I'm 500 apart with one dealer and 300 apart with another. Maybe I'm going to wait. As someone said, they're probably only going to be better "deals" but it's a crap shoot with selection- - -

Funny, I took my daughter's car (home from college) in today because she's been driving around with an October inspection sticker. Had the car inspected, but noticed a real "squeal" coming from her starter when the car's cold. (This is a something Nissan's are famous for, but her's was a little excessive.) Anyhow, went by a guy in W'boro that actually rebuilds starters, generators, alternators, etc. and asked him who may be a good engine guy for older carbureted engines.

He said he does some of that, so I'm going to talk to him Monday after Christmas when I take Tara's car down.

Anyway, thanks again for the offer; if you're ever around the W'boro area, let me know. I'll be happy to show you what I've got.
