: Wetsanding
Mossimo777 Jun 16th, 00, 9:23 PM My 2.5 year old paint job on a 71 ss clone has some dirt in the paint and overspray. I was wondering if wetsanding it will take off the overspray and dirt and if so, how much would it cost approximately for the whole car to be done.
Thanx
Steve
ChicagoChevelle68 Jun 17th, 00, 2:00 AM Mossimo baby,
Try polishing compond first. If it still remains, go for rubbing compound,(more aggresive). Then, if all else fails. wetsand with 1000 to 1500 grit sandpaper.

Wes V Jun 17th, 00, 7:51 AM Moss;
I'd recommend that you rent or borrow a buffer that runs at 1200 rpm and use 3M "finesse-it" (it HAS to run at this speed!). Buy a new foam pad for it.
It's worthless trying to use it by hand and also doesn't work well at a faster speed. (too strange)
It's best to refer to Finess-it as a polishing compound.

Wes Colby Jun 17th, 00, 10:55 AM Steve, follow Wes's suggestion to a 'T'. That stuff works extremely well for the type of paint condition you have. You'll love the results. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

70isfine Jun 17th, 00, 5:40 PM if it has clear coat,you should sand the dirt with 1500,preferably 2000 with water then buff with the 3mfinesse it II.

69SSGA Jun 17th, 00, 8:02 PM I do have one question. Have you ever used a high speed buffer before and if not you can easily burn thru the paint on the edges if your not careful. I had a friend borrow mine and he burned thru the corners of the qtr.panel. Just a suggestion is to have someone help you that has done this before. I am not saying it is hard just to be careful.

From my experience, Finesse-It II won't take out any scratches or dirt. If you wet sand with 1500 or 2000, you'll have to machine buff with 3M Microfinishing compound on a wool pad, then buff with Finesse-It II on a foam pad. When using the Microfinishing compound, cover anything you don't want residue and dust on. It makes a mess.

dselko Jun 18th, 00, 6:24 AM I am not a paint expert, but if you have an uncatalyzed enamal, can it even be buffed? I thought you could only wet sand and buff base coat/clear coat or hardened (catalyzed) enamels. Just curious.
70isfine Jun 18th, 00, 9:55 AM sorry your right.i meant 3m perfect it II.

black396ss Jun 22nd, 00, 5:33 PM to remove overspray, and other surface contaminants, try Clay Magic, or one of the similiar clay products. I really did not believe it did what it can, and it is a hell of a lot less expensive than colorsanding, or such, with 2000 grit paper, that can ruin a paint job in a flash.
Tom Lasater Jun 22nd, 00, 7:57 PM I got overspray all over my "Formal" Chevelle and my painter used some type of clay product and Finesse and it all came off. That stuff was stuck to the surface, I suppose that you may have to wet sand paint imperfections out then wheel it out.
