Ok guys I need some information. I picked up a new fuel tank 3 yrs ago. (I know what is he doing??) My wife has been nagging me to get the dang thing in. I bought one without a filler neck as I couldn't find one at the time that came with it. I have pulled my old tank and filled it with water after draining the fuel. What would be the best way to remove the old filler neck and best way to install it in the new tank? Also if anyone could help me with the routing of the fuel / vapor lines so my car quits smelling like its leaking gas inside would also be a big help. 72 wiht a 454 I do have the original charcaol canister but have a RPM / Holley 3310 / Soon to be Holley/ Carter mechanical fuel pump.

Deon, your best bet is to find a radiator shop that also repairs gas tanks to do this for you. the cost should minimal

A propane torch and ordinary solder works pretty well. I have done this after washing the tank and letting set out in the sun for a day to dry it out.

GVMLS6 thank you for your suggestion. I called a radiator shop just around the corner from me. The guy said he normally doesn't work on gas tanks but seeing how I have a brand new one he didn't think he would have any trouble and he is only going to charge me for 1 hr labor. (45 bux) I should have it Friday. Of course my interior is still in boxes outside of the car as I need to cut out the floor pan under the rear seat and weld it in. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Thank you

Deon, glad to help. Sure, it would have been cheaper if you did it yourself, but if you are not accoustomed to soldering, and it leaked after you got it installed, how much would it cost to re-do it? Besides, why quibble over $40.00?

DONNY,

If $25 sounds right for simply soldering the neck in, then $20 should be about right for removing the neck from the old tank. There is your $45. You might have missed the fact the neck is going to be taken from the old tank.

I would agree, that if it was just a simple solder job, I'd spend the $45 on a Bernz-o-matic torch, and learn to solder myself. But that is me. It sounds like Deon hasn't had much time to work on the car, considering he said he has had the new tank 3 years ago.

Dang I didnt want to start a war here. I was at Lowes and I could have gotten a brazing torch for 20 bux + solder(sp). I would have then had to cut the old one out and then put it in the new one. I like the idea that its guaranteed work. I am busy with other things on my car btw. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif I have gutted the interior from firewall to trunk and found that I need to weld in a rear seat floor pan. got me a mig welder and gas setup just for that. Then I have to start ripping the seats appart and redoing them. Got the dash restored to go in it. and then have closed chamber heads for the 454 at the machine shop. So saving an hour or 2 is worth it to me. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
