Talking to my friend, he said a instructor who restores antique engines, cleans them with 1 part molasses to 4 parts water. I wanted to laugh and tell him, no way, but I kept my mouth shut and googled it. Sure enough, I guess it removes rust. Anyone else ever hear of this or done it to get rid of rust?

I guess I would have never figured for molasses to have anything other than a nuetral pH and it certainly is NOT a surfactant so I don't know why it does anything??
Now, thinging a bit??, there may be a bit more sulfur in "Blackstrap" molasses which may turn it acidic in water????

Has been used for MANY years in the restoration industry. Removes rust without damage to the part. Molasses and warm water, soak for several days. I don' t know about any "cleaning" properties though. Here's a write up on the web about several processes for the gear heads. http://www.antiqueautoranch.com/montana500/adrian/rust.html
