: Cheap Paint ?
68Elkie Jun 2nd, 04, 8:56 PM I ran across this on eBay Complete Urethane Paint Job. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=63702&item=2480989642) It's a gal of primer, 3 qts paint, gal. of clear, catalyst, reducer, and a bunch of misc. stuff for $185 shipped. I like the price - what I'd like to know is how disappointed would I be with it? Does anybody have any experience with this stuff?
P.S. I read pnutkemist's post on the cost of primer, and must admit I was just as surprised last week when I went to a Sherwin-Williams store to get some. Not only did I think it was outrageously expensive, they had to sell me more than I needed because of the can sizes.
MARTINSR Jun 2nd, 04, 9:08 PM I'm sorry buying paint thru the mail from a company no one knows anything about is nuts.
There are plenty of value line paints like OMNI, NASON, Cross/FIRE, Dimension, and others that can be bought from reputable jobbers right there in your home town for no more money than the ebay stuff.
Napa auto parts had a paint called MSU for about $100.00 a sprayable gallon, hardener and all! Now the kicker, ANY COLOR. That's right, bright red, $100.00 a sprayable gallon. It is a true acrylic urethane and VERY durable.
You need to buy paint from someone you can walk in and talk to. You need to buy paint from someone who has other materials you need. It just doesn't make sense.
The price of paint is pennies compared to the cars value let alone other parts you buy.
Black70454 Jun 2nd, 04, 10:24 PM Wow! That is cheap, considering that a gallon of clear (DC5100) at our shop around a $125. I don't know if I would trust it. Make sure all the materials are compatible. Remember it takes good materials to make a good paint job.
feedphillipnow Jun 3rd, 04, 4:46 PM Yeah I wouldnt go for it. I can see it being tempting. Everyone says after doing alllll the work and time, effort, money. Why cut corners on the paint which is the most seen part of the car. Im still not sure what Im going to shoot on this thing. I still want to build a booth and do it myself, I have a nice little gravity feed gun still in the box. So lets say I go out and spend $900 on paint alone plus primers and shoot it myself and poof! something happens? I cant live with a mistake that expensive. Are you going to shoot it yourself? I think It isnt a bad idea to go with big brands, but there lower line. That way it's kind of split in the middle for price and quality. Doesnt anyone get a wholesale discount around this place? ;)
Professor_SS Jun 3rd, 04, 4:59 PM suck it up and buy the good stuff. I've tried the Omni and other cheaper products and they are not worth the few bucks you might save up front. I had 1200 in all the supplies to paint my 72, but man is it sweet. Worth every penny.
68Elkie Jun 3rd, 04, 10:45 PM Thanks for the replies. Pretty much what I expected, but I had to ask.
I'd like to paint it myself, but would hate to see $900 wasted if I screw it up. I wouldn't mind as much if I only spent $185 on paint, but then I would be pretty peeved if I did it well and the paint sucked.
I even took it to Maaco for an estimate. Body work alone was $1500 (mostly sanding panels down to get rid of surface rust, which is what prompted me to look for a primer) Even they want $1100 for a BC/CC paint job.
feedphillipnow Jun 4th, 04, 5:09 PM Macco wants $1100 for a BC/CC? That doesnt seem too bad, what kind of paint is there better line? I still concider doing the last of the body work and all primer work and having someone shoot it. It would be alot of fun to do it ourselves though.
