: Strange noise at shift point and wobble in flywheel....

My 71 has a few noises. One noise seems to be coming from the motor. I have been trying to track it down. I looked all under and listened all over. When I looked underneath I could see that the flywheel was not tracking straight. It has a slight wobble to it. How will this affect the motor and transmission? The noise seems to be coming from deep in the back of the motor or the front of the trans that I can tell. Also, when I am getting on it a little and it gets higher in the RPM's before shifting I am getting a strange noise that goes away as soon as the trans shifts to the next gear. If I drive like a normal person (slow for most of us probably) it does not make the noise. Any ideas? The transmission was rebuilt at a shop in Arizona before Nik and I traded cars. They apparently put in a new converter. I do not have the receipt yet so I am going off what I was told. It did great on the drive home and the first month of driving. And then the noise started about a month back.

Side note, I have replaced the fuel pump and there is no noise when listening to the motor right at the block by the fuel pump.

You could have a cracked flexplate. A common problem and the crack will be from the center hub out to one of the big holes. Unbolt the convertor and slide it back and take a good look at the flexplate. Rotate it so you can inspect all of it.

Frank, what is the sound???. Mine is doing this also. Mine makes a quick squeeling sound when it shifts hard. Normal driving doesn't do it. I'm pretty sure it's my belt in my chrome alternator pulley. I'm going to buy a deep groove pulley .

64 Elco,
I will check it out thanks. Since this is my daily driver at least for two more weeks and we are out of town the next two weekends it may be awhile before I can get it up on ramps and tear into it.

Jim,
It is a difficult noise to put into words. It almost sounds like somebody tossed some gravel up into the flexplate. That is the closest I can come. I know the alternator belt is OK. I have checked all the belts and the tension. I have done the wood stick all over the top of the motor and even underneath the car. The noise is coming from underneath the car.
