: Overhouling Car on the Block
'540 Chevell Dec 17th, 05, 1:39 PM Just picked up a Barrett Jackson magazine and it had all the cars that are going for sale in the next event and I was shocked to see an overhauling car on the block.
It’s the 902-merlot do guys remember that car? That convertible camaro that was junk with a bad frame that belonged to that actor in TV. Now with less than 100 miles it’s on the block at BJ what do you think? Man not to many people get that chance to get overhauled but I always thought that one day somebody was going to sell their car because they needed money but I would never think this guy would.
Maybe the cats out of the bag and all the other folks that are in need of the almighty dollar should take their cars to the block like this guy but some of them provably do not know of Barrett Jackson but he sure did.
What do you think.
Here are links to the car.

Racing Dec 17th, 05, 4:14 PM That is sad. :(
circletrack Dec 18th, 05, 12:41 AM Was that Ian Zering's car? What happened to that guy anyhow? I don't care for that car, Foose does some awesome work, but this just doesn't cut it.
Alwhite00 Dec 18th, 05, 5:22 PM Ian Zering (Sp?) What a friggin a-hole. C'mon - it was a big enough charity case that they chose him of all people to be "overhauled" and then he is going to sell the thing. No class. >:

gearbanger Dec 19th, 05, 4:47 PM That's what they get for overhauling a car for a rich guy. That is crap when they do that stuff for people that have the means to do it for themselves. I think it should be reserved for people that love cars and would give anything to have a cool hotrod, but are working as hard as they can already to give their family what they need.
Unlike that picky whiney @sshole with the brand new '05 GT that was complaining about the kind of graphics that Foose was using on the car that his wife didn't know her arse from a hole in the ground anyway.
Derek69SS Dec 19th, 05, 5:05 PM I'd sell it too. That car is ugly IMHO, but I'd ruin the "value" of a Foose-built car by un-doing all the ugly things Foose's crew did to it, so why not sell it and build one the way I want it with the proceeds?
I'd rather have my half-assed low-budget car built by me, than any hotrod that was built by someone else's hands with someone else's vision.
Thad Dec 19th, 05, 9:49 PM I don't mind the car, its a little too flamboyant for my taste.
But the fruity actor and his buddies really seemed like tools.
If it was your 15 year old little sisters favorite TV show, you know you probably won't be able to relate to the actors.
I hope the car sells low, and to some (more or less) regular Joe, who doesn't pay extra because some hollywood tool owned it, just digs the car.
'540 Chevell Dec 20th, 05, 1:02 AM After being told about his new car only seconds before his arrival at American Muscle Cars, Ian is in complete shock. Hearing him say, "This isn't my car," multiple times, our editor (and "Overhaulin'" accomplice), Terry Cole assured him it was.

100 miles later Barrett Jackson.
frankf72malibu Dec 20th, 05, 2:05 AM Maybe he is going to do the right thing and give the money he makes on it to a charity... right, who am I trying to kid here!

LateNight72 Dec 20th, 05, 3:25 PM I thought this guy was near broke when he had gotten the car overhauled? I thought he was working some crappy job or something like this? (Not trying to defend, just wanna know).
Anyhow, I am not a fan of the car anyways... I would find it better to sell it to someone who likes it rather then to demask the "Foose" out of the car.
JMO,
Todd
'540 Chevell Dec 20th, 05, 6:10 PM I think that he can do with it what he wants but to have driven the car only a 100 miles! WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT!! maybe it does have a problem just does not sound good you get a car like that dropped in your laps and you do not drive it and then for sale. Very intresting. If there is something wrong with it maybe Chip is not that good and you guys should stop t trying to get on the show.
I wonder if I can get on. HMMM
gearbanger Dec 21st, 05, 9:41 AM I know some people either don't have time to work on restoring cars but for me building the car and making it work with my own two hands is more than half the fun and pride in owning it.
Secondly, if that guy doesn't have enough money to build a Camaro up then it's because he has a bad habit or two. It doesn't take an actors salary.
Busted Knuckles Dec 21st, 05, 10:18 PM I think it's going to be used to test the water on one of Chip's cars and try to gauge the value of something he's done as one of his TV projects. I like the car, love the real look of the flames, I think it's a pretty sweet ride. Gotta lose the video screens, though. Leave those to the fart pipe winged crew, they really seem to enjoy seeing how many they can fit into a jelly bean car. If the guy didn't appreciate what was done for him and what it would be worth to someone who loved the car, let it go to someone who'll put a helluva lot more than 100 miles on it.
Motorhead62 Dec 21st, 05, 11:55 PM A TOOL indeed! I could not have said that better.
Slowdude Dec 22nd, 05, 11:26 AM Just my feelings. While I get the reasons for dissing the guy for selling the car and hopping on the "ingrate" bandwagon, I can also appreciate that if you took my project (to get my car back to stock) and without asking, completely "foosed" it up, I would be very conflicted. Thanks for the thought and quality work, but don't touch my stuff without asking. I can see how you would lose interest in the car quickly if you were were dreaming of a stock z-28 stock clone and you got video screens and a car you can't take down the street without being mobbed in. It would be like someone taking your favorite pair of jeans you wanted repaired and turning them into a ball gown. Uhhhhh thanks.....nice sequins....
I would keep what money it took to buy the car I was dreaming of in the first place and donate the remainder to charity. Then you could say thanks to Chip for the car of your dreams and thanks to Chip for feeding the Katrina victims!

novaderrik Dec 26th, 05, 1:43 AM if someone would have done that to my car- i would probably sell it too.
they had that whole Corvette chassis already made for it front and rear suspensions with a tubular chassis connecting it all that BOLTED to the bottom of the car- and Foose threw it away because it was too "flexible"- and it wasn't even bolted under the car. actually, i think the sponsors had more to with that part of the build than anything- what good is a fully completed late model Corvette suspenion to a company like Hotchkis or Currie or Baer that is trying to sell musclecar chassis goodies?
i think Ian was more ****ed about it than anything, but played it cool while the cameras were there because, well, he IS a tv guy and probably actually wanted it to be aired, so he could get some tv exposure, and so the car would be worth more when the time came to sell it off. if he would have raised hell about it, then the episode never would have aired, and he would have just another fugly Camaro with big Foose wheels and a bunch of donated Hotchkis suspension stuff.
but, since it was on tv, it is a piece of television "history", and is worth more.
i wonder what Ian will have to say about it AFTER the auction, when he has no vested interest in it anymore?
Gus_Mahn Jan 7th, 06, 8:49 PM On the Overhaulin' web site it says that being Overhauled may cause tax liability. What do you think tax would be for an overhaulin' car, and when do you pay it? Whats the worth of the car? I'd guess it's worth $50,000 without TV. As featured on Overhaulin, I bet it brings at least $150,000 at auction. If he is truly broke, the tax may be a factor. Still pathetic if he is broke. I'm sure he made lots from BH 90210.
I don't care for that car much either. There are probably 10 other Overhauled cars I'd rather have. If someone hears the sale price, please post it here.
circletrack Jan 7th, 06, 9:14 PM Did anyone check out the number of 69 Camaros on the auction block? Amazing! I'm interested to see what some of them go for....
Bowtieguys Jan 8th, 06, 3:49 PM Just to let you know, there have been at least 2 other Overhaulin cars for sale on e-bay as well. "The Gambler" Mustang, and the Ford Explorer.
Andy69 Jan 9th, 06, 12:54 PM heck if I had an overhaulin car I'd take it to the auction block so fast it would make your head spin. With today's prices, I could sell it for 6 figures, then use the money to find and restore an excellent SS or something else cool and use the leftover money to buy a house or send my kid to college.
MarkM Jan 11th, 06, 11:56 AM I don't blame him a bit. If you had a Camaro with no working top, wouldn't you want to get ride of it, lol.
Thad Jan 12th, 06, 9:49 PM Just to let you know, there have been at least 2 other Overhaulin cars for sale on e-bay as well. "The Gambler" Mustang, and the Ford Explorer.
I know that on a Chevelle site we're supposed to hate Mustangs, but that was/is a bitchin Mustang. The carved tires were too much, guess I'd save them for shows, but that was a really neat Stang.
The Foosed Camaro that started this thread would look just fine without the flames. Not that they really look bad, just a little too showy for my taste.
I got hung up on the guys goofy personality, and it is true, maybe he really wanted the Corvette suspension, and rather than undo, what is probably pretty nice work, sell it and buy another basket case, to make what you really wanted.
Just hope that the "celeb factor" doesn't get him extra bucks.
Used to think Don Johnson was at least kinda cool till he made an arse of himself on the B.J. Auction. Wonder if the fella who paid too much for the "clone cuda" is still kicking himself, found a bigger sucker, or the car is worth more now ?
'540 Chevell Jan 22nd, 06, 3:12 AM Any no what the car sold for? Please post info Thanks.
Gus_Mahn Jan 22nd, 06, 10:20 AM The 05 Mustang is for sale right now. It has one bid $45000 reserve not met.

Thad I agree. The Gambler car looks awsome. The Gambler, the Cuda, and the black/red Impala are my favorites.

That's the Mustang that the husband was arguing with Foose about the graphics, What an a-hole.

Wheelhop Jan 22nd, 06, 2:33 PM Do you have to pay taxes on an overhauled car like that? You are getting a substantially more valuable car.
I heard about a family in that show that rebuilds your house in a week "extreme homes" maybe, that once it was redone they couldn't afford to pay the taxes on it.
Would like to see Foose restore a car and try to keep it as original as possible. Probably too hard to do in a week though.
keetes Jan 22nd, 06, 11:55 PM IMO, I think the car was crap as most of the cars done on that show. If I recall correctly weren't the parts usually donated by manufacturers? If so then whats so valuable about having some guy name Foose and a small crew work on a car? I've seen several episodes and to be honest with you I wasn't impressed.
If I were Ian, I'd sell the car too. What fun is it to own a convertible that someone else did all the work to it? Not to mention it was most likely finished the way Ian didn't want it done. But then again I did not see that exact episode.
Oh, btw, it's not exactly that impressive to restore a car in a week. Especially, if you have a crew working on it, some donated parts, and the facility/tools of which to do the work What is impressive, is one guy or gal who restores their very own car in their garage at their pace. What isn't impressive is some show on tv that rolls a junker in, strips it, paints it, replaces parts, then rolls it out the door as a work of art. Where's the originality in that? After all, it's not like they built the vehicle from scratch like the chopper builders do on their shows.
I'd be very ****ed if a friend or wife arranged for my car to be "stolen." Then a week later I find a crew of guys have screwed up my idea of what I wanted for a ride.
thricemalibu Jan 23rd, 06, 12:02 AM .what A Loser! That Could Have Been My Car On Overhauled

I wouldn't think you need to pay taxes on it, at least until you sold it at a profit. Its a gift after all right ?
I think selling a car after its been "overhauled" is kind of rude. Like re-gifting.
But then if you have need, and those needs, outweigh your 50,000 dollar custom car, I guess I can understand selling it. And if you happen to hate what they did.
I like some of the cars much more than others, but haven't seen one that wasn't better after it was done, than when it started.
Hey Chip, I leave the keys on the entertainment center.
Do the 68 Chevelle or the 84 Corvette, I'm currently pretty happy with the 72 as she sits. :D
Oh, and try to stay at or under 17" wheels, pot holes in PA you know.
4FTTY4 Jan 23rd, 06, 12:33 AM I just read on another site that it ended up going for $67K...
OrrieG Jan 25th, 06, 12:33 AM Any time you "win" something of value you owe taxes on it. We had a run of luck about 15 years ago and in one year won a total of about 2K in cash and tires/wheels, etc. from a local radio station. Tax guys were there giving out 1099's for anything over $500 (if I remember right), we got one for retail value of the tires and wheels $1500. Got taxed as simple income. Same happens with Oprahs cars, Fooses Overhaulin cars (less original value), Extreme homes and HG TV's dream house. Of the HG houses only 2 have the original owners, most sold because the value knocks you up into the highest tax bracket. Extreme homes are a bummer because it also raises the property taxes.
Say a Foose car has a retail value (parts and labor) of 100K. 39% federal + state (8% in Idaho) is what you would owe by the following April 15th (or October if you file extension) 100K x .47 = 47,000 in taxes + what ever you owe from regular earnings taxed at the higher rate. So do you sell the car and put the balance in your pocket or take out a loan to pay the taxes? If it sells for less you might be able to argue down the taxes based on fair market value.
55classic Feb 10th, 10, 2:18 PM Not to be a pain in the butt...but [lol] here's my take on why the overhaulin' cars go up for sale.... They did a 29 ford on the show, it was beautiful....car show s up on e-bay.... they interview Foose about the price of $75,ooo ...Foose says, factoring all the hours by pros at a rate of $2500/ week/ pro...and all the pieces that car cost $200,000 to build...so...your car gets overhauled...you're peeing your pants with joy...at the end of the year, Either TLC or Discovery, I forget which channel it is...they're looking for their tax breaks...they send the owner a statement that the car was valued at $200K and that will be what they use for their write off against taxes for the TV show....the network loves that...they can write off all that stuff, the people that donated all the pieces and labor can deduct their claims....and then the zinger....now...the car owner is responsible for that value of $200,000 against their income....and certainly, they can't hide from that tax because they accepted it as a gift...so...you take Joe Average guy with an income of $50,000 and all of a sudden it looks like he made an extra $200,000, the tax man wants his cut of the deal....so...In the case of the 29 Ford...the guy's probably trying to get enough for it to pay his taxes....then he loses his ride...there ain't no free lunch out there. It's a real shame...just imagine those people that get a house, for free, from Extreme 'House' Makeover...these people are usually destitute and then they find out that they are responsible for taxes on their gift...no one tells them about that part of the show, I bet!:(
Highway Star Feb 10th, 10, 2:25 PM Don't the Overhaulin' cars go on tour for a while? Maybe it has only been driven that much because it wasn't available to drive for a while, and beyond that, maybe he was scared he'd mess it up.
I am not trying to take up for the man, but c'mon.

Can't...my research has led me to visits by the 3 lettered and other agencies....they showed me e-mails I sent, thinking they were private.... went to a Ron Paul for Pres march in DC, before the elections.... had well over 10,000 people, reporters claim there were 1500.... as materials, cds, etc were handed out...people at the podium were saying, keep your stuff close because the F.. was working the crowds...I sort of chuckled...finally had to go to the porta' potty, came back and my stuff had been searched and all the materials were gone. It's scary. I am done.
