: can't make up my mind. stock crank or 496?

Guys I have been going round and round on what to do with my 454. I was set on using the stock crank and rods. I want to make an honest 550 HP, but would mind in the 600 range. But everyone I talk to says that I am stupid for using a stock crank and rods for that much HP. I do not race that much, but when i drive my car I am pretty hard on it.

Do you guys think I should use my stock crank and rods?

If not what rotating assembly do you guys think I should use. Wolfplace if you read this what do you reccomend since you sell these assembalies? Also how much would one cost from you?

Thanks for any help because I really need to make my mind up so I can get this block to the machine shop.

Thanks
Tom

Getting the block prepped has no real bearing on what you finally build. No matter how you go, you wil probably do the same work to the block - line hone, deck, bore/hone. IE : as far as the cylinders, a 454 .030 over is finished at 4.280 + .001 tolerance. The clearance (.0015 - .004) is built into the piston. My own experience has been to get the block signed off as "in good condition" prior to commiting to any new rotating assembly parts.

Thanks. I always thought that there was a little clearancing that needed to be done for a 496. Thanks for the info.

Depending on the rods you use maybe. If you do a 496 motor, just use stroker clearanced rods and its a non issue. Worse case is minor grinding at the pan rail, but this can all be done after the fact, just hit it with a die grinder and a stone, wash out and assemble.

I don't think its stupid to use a stock rod and crank at 600 horse, as long as your not spraying it or revving it to the moon. But, if you have everything apart, definately go with a 496. You can go higher down the road, and from what I hear it will be a more street friendly motor then a high-strung 454.
