My ATI converter is here!
I'm somebody!
Navin R Johnson......
Now....what movie am I refering to?
Anyway, my new 9" MRT Treemaster double throw down converter showed up today. ATI turns things pretty quick.
Of course, I'll have to wait about 4 more months to try it out.........Arrrgh

That's a lot of throw down. :D
I want to be thee first (this hour) to say, "and DON'T forget to seat it fully onto the transmission pump. push-turn-push, then repeat." ;)

Bob West Dec 12th, 05, 9:00 PM what did it replace? Was there a reason you went with a 9" converter? I'm going to order a new 8" ATI before the end of the year.
Davec43 Dec 12th, 05, 9:59 PM What made you go with ati instead of coan or b*m just curious?
Motor Martyr Dec 12th, 05, 11:16 PM I believe one of the reasons was my advice.
Coan and B&M dont stack up to the best Converters in the industry.
Ron congrats!

Come on Ed...I mean Brian<J/K>..."one of the best" would of surficed. There is no doubt they make good stuff. Their damper's are the absolute best, but in the mid range 8-9" bracket converter, there are several companies that can get it done.
kamero68 Dec 13th, 05, 12:55 AM I hope your converter works out for you as well, or better, than mine did for me. I put in a Trans-King 9" a couple of weeks ago and knocked a couple of tenths of my ET at the 1/8 mile track. I need to get out to the 1/4 mile track now so I can get some up dated time slips for my signature 1/4 mile times.:) Good luck
Scott
blazerbob Dec 13th, 05, 1:01 AM Ron, I ordered my ATI 8" converter and should be receiving in couple of days. It will more closely match the new 498 that I'm building. By the way I have complete Cal-Trac rear suspension for sale if any interest. Yea, waiting around 4mths before T&T sucks but have an engine to be putting together...

Hey Mike,
Always good advice.
I've put more than a few converters in, took the ATF baths to prove it! There never seems to be a way to avoid that. Sometimes I think I ought to get 2 new quarts out, squirt one under the car, and one all over me before starting!
Bottom line, if the converter isn't about 1/2" from the flywheel, you haven't seated it correctly into the pump.

Mr. Hartunian...he hates these cans!
Cracks me up to this day......

Ron454 Dec 13th, 05, 1:49 AM Bob,
We went with a 9" because I drive my car to the track. It also will give some room should I fall into a bunch of $$$$, not likely......and went with more cubes some day. Wil also allow for a bit of the magic juice, should I need a few tenths in the heads up program.
I spent about an hour on the phone with Charlie going over my combo.
BTW....my present converter is an old 10" B&M race unit, designed for a BIG engine in a heavy car with N2O. So to say the least, it's tight. 2000 and it was driving the car through the lights........not the best for RT on a pro tree or keeping the chassis unloaded prior to the launch.
Dave:
I went with ATI based on Brian's and Todds reccomendations....along with the fact that I've been a balancer customer of ATI's for many years. I have recieved good service from them, and I go back to people who treat me well. Pretty simple reasons, but converter science is beyond me, and best left to the folks who know. I realize that there are other companies who can provide, but how does one choose? I can't afford to buy 3 or 4 $900 converters and pick the best one. My guess is that there will be small differences between them......performance wise anyway.
Scott:
You made great progress with yours. Interesting that more converter made the chassis work better. But not surprising. I plan to leave my chassis alone until I run with the new converter and evaluate from there. Trying hard to follow the don't change more than one thing at a time rule!
Blazer Bob:
Send me a PM about the CalTrac setup. I think my setup is ok....maybe....but am interested in other options.
Also tell me about your 498!
Now...back to the movie......."Son....this is S**t....and this is Shinola"..........

Slowpoke70 Dec 13th, 05, 2:00 AM Ron, put it on and drive down here, Irwindale is still open this Thursday. After that, we have to wait alllll the way to the first week of January for Irwindale to open back up.
Blazer Bob, if Ron doesn't end up buying your Cal Tracs set up, shoot me an email, I know of another Nova that could use it.
Ron454 Dec 13th, 05, 2:05 AM Enrique,
I doubt there are enough gas stops between Oregon and Irwindale!
Jan 1? Lucky guys........
Ron
blazerbob Dec 13th, 05, 2:42 AM Ron, PM has been sent. I need to rent that movie!
Ron I have an enclosed trailer that the Nova will fit in if you want to hit a T-N-T in Sacto. Don't have go all the way south to get a run in. Might need a set of chains for the tow setup to get past Ashland though :D
Davec43 Dec 13th, 05, 6:11 AM I'm a firm believer on doing things once and I've ben going through the archives since its almost time for me to buy a tc and heard some good stuff about coan... So I guess its ati hands down huh thanks
Whittaker Dec 13th, 05, 8:21 AM I beat on my Coan a lot. It is a street strip convertor but it flashes well and the stall rpm is right on. I may go to a higher stall if I pull the motor in the spring. I haven't heard a bad thing about Coan yet.
Best et.s for next spring.

I was expecting my car to hook better with a looser converter. I had learned that pre loading my suspension against the converter on the line would cause much more tire spin at launch than when I flashed it from idle. It seemed to like a "hit".
The converter I have now lets me flash it much harder and I can get a little more rpm footbraking at the tree before the suspension tries to load. He also built the converter with a steel stator that has a noticable "hit" when it reaches peak stall. Feels pretty neat when it hits, sort of like the sensation of a huge rubber mallet slamming down on cement. Padded, but firm.
I think you'll really like yours too. Watching your videos your car appeared to lift all around and surge forward, and then it would slip the tires and drop, then grab and lift again. Mine was doing the same thing. But now it comes up and stays up and launches much harder.
good luck, its going to feel like a long winter for you.
Scott

Jeff,
I need to build a new 3.5" exh for the car too.....so it's gonna be some cold nights on the garage floor.
We need to hook up in Woodburn some time to meet and make some runs.
Seeing how we are practically neighbors!
I used to race there a lot, but PIR is just so convienient.
